RE: What is your next demolition "wish-list item"
Actually, I don't want to see another building demolished. Not even the new stadium. I am a firm believer that a cities skyline is what makes a city unique and interesting. Unfortunately, we have demolished two structures that made El Paso's skyline unique.

Most city's try and save their buildings not destroy them.

I can tell you however what will likely be next. It's going to be the Abraham Chavez theater and Convention Center.

The Downtown revitalization project shows a 20k stadium in that location.

City Council already passed a commitment to the Abraham Chavez Theater. I don't think that is going anywhere. I could be wrong. The Convention Center, I am not so sure.

If I recall correctly, the firm that planned the Downtown revitalization project suggested that downtown be split into specific districts. A government district, a shopping district, sports district and entertainment district.

Everything that city council has been doing is following that model. That is one of the reasons why they moved city hall closer to other government buildings. Abrahan Chavez sits right on the area that is going to be designated for sports.

The thinking is that the Plaza Theater already serves the same purpose as the Abraham Chavez theater and is already located in the Entertainment district along with the Arts and History museums.

Again. I don't think that the right approach is to knock down buildings in favor of new ones. It is far more cost effective to renovate historic buildings and make them like new.

I did some more research and found that there were two plans for downtown El Paso. There was a 2006 plan that I think was done by the city and a 2007 plan done by professionals.

Interestingly enough, both plans had problems with City Hall even before the proposed baseball stadium.

One plan calls for a 15k to 18k sports arena in the Abraham Chavez location to attract larger conventions.

Lots of conflicting information.

That is brand new information that has never been stated here before. No. Really.

Perhaps, but the Camino Real is in really bad shape IMO.

I've been to cities where historical building have been renovated and it's a great for the city skyline. I realize that not all building can be saved but we should be saving more than we knock down.

We are gaining a stadium and that is good but we knocked down thee landmarks.

It's just not a good ratio.

I wouldn't call the City Hall building a landmark. At least not a historical one (which you didn't say). The Insights Museum, in name, is shame to lose but we are getting a new Children's Museum and the actual content of the Insights Museum can be relocated. I am not sure what the third landmark was you are referring to.

The actual owners of the Camino Real have hired a new general manager and claim to have a new commitment to the hotel

Yeah, I wouldnt call city hall a landmark either. That place was an absolute dump.

As for the CR renovations and their new GM, ill believe it when I see it.

City Hall and the Insights building may not have been historical landmarks but they were landmarks none the less. So was ASARCO.

In modern usage, a landmark includes anything that is easily recognizable, such as a monument, building, or other structure. In American English it is the main term used to designate places that might be of interest to tourists due to notable physical features or historical significance.

The Eiffel Tower is a landmark
The John Hancock Building
The Sears Tower
Dodger Stadium
St Louis Arch
The Lincoln Memorial
etc.

Those are landmarks.... Now tell me Asarco smoke stack is a landmark. OR a city building from the 70s is a landmark.

As the name indicates, a landmark is an identifying item, place, or thing, that tells a person where they are. If a person is not from El Paso, the city building and the Asarco stack would not be readily identifiable to them.... In fact, they would ask, "Where the f--k am I?".

If you think ASARCO isn't a landmark then you must not be a native of El Paso . After many long trips, there was nothing more assuring than seeing the smoke stack. It let me know that I was almost home.

I guess I was not emotionally connected to the stacks. I drove through their just after the smokestack demolition and didn't even notice anything was missing.

RE: What is your next demolition "wish-list item"
I was watching the mayoral debates and noticed that all but one of the candidates thought that tearing down city hall was a bad idea.

If the majority of people in this city wanted to see city hall demolished, why then would 8 of the 9 say it was a bad idea?

Assuming your numbers are correct, 8 out of 9 mayoral candidate don't represent the unique opinions of 700K El Pasoans.

Even Darren Hunt, on last night's Xtra, stated several times that the only people who seem to have a problem with the demolition of City Hall are people in the public's eye. Attention grab. He stated in all his news coverage, research, and actual attendance at functions, there were not many actual citizens who were upset.

...moving on.
