If we beat Aggie in Aggieland then imo the success of the season will rest upon the following:
1. Going undefeated and getting into a BCS bowl
2. Getting the EZF complex fully funded
3. Getting all assistant coaches including Coach K, check that, especily Coach K, significant raises
A&M is a very, very, good team. If we can go to Kyle field and win, there is no one on our schedule that is close to A&M. To not win out against our schedule would be a dissapointment.
In addition to win out and still have the full support if the school, alumni, and Rice supporters would be equally dissapointing. This would be the ultimate put up or shut up test.
Finally, if we win out, there is a strong case for the coaches that 1. They can recruit, 2. They can coach, and 3. They get them physically ready to play. If we win out and don't reward our coaches accordingly I will be very dissapointed.
But yes, there is the matter of Coach Sumlin, Johhny Football, and the 12th man. Looking forward to it! Might even go to the Aggie spring game tomorrow wearing Rice gear! Lol

I can't imagine a more wonderful outcome.
I turn 50 that day..... I'm making my birthday wish NOW

I think 14-0 as a minimum is setting the bar a little high. But IF we were to beat the Ags, then any loss after will be magnified in the degree of disappointment, and need I remind you, we are 0-6 against Tulsa under Bailiff, so no shot there.
Seriously, I think every every game is winnable, but not all are likely. let's go one at a time and see what happens.

I believe it's sections 148 and 149, the last two sections at the end opposite their end zone facility. You literally have to stand the whole game or you can't see anything because of the pitch of the stadium.
14-0 as a minimum is too high.... but it's also not impossible. It requires one upset, no collapses and one game playing "above" our norm. For just about every other game, playing to our mean will likely mean a victory.
For me, anything less than 8 and I'm cleaning house. Less than 10 will be disappointing. More than 12 will make me happy. AT 10 or fewer, we should be able to identify a number of weak coaching links. At 12 or more and we may have to pay up to keep some good coaches.
but I want a birthday wish
The KEY is how we develop our younger talent. I hope that COach B will put enough emphasis on winning the OOC games to not PLAN on going too deep in the roster (except where necessary)... and then to create opportunities for them to play in other games... i.e. rather than milk the clock against a team we can handle, run your offense and defense and pour it on until we are up comfortably, and then start getting guys strategic reps and rest (not wholesale). We need to more often be the team that gives up 17 points in the 4th and wins after shutting them down for 3/4 rather than the team who is shut down for 3/4 and then scores 17 in the 4th.
I'm not setting the bar at 14 wins. I would be happy with 8-9 regular season wins plus an opportunity to win 2 extra games (CUSA title and a bowl). I don't expect us to beat A&M. All I am saying is that if we do beat A&M, it would be dissapointing to knock off a Top 5 team while on the road and then underperform against teams that are vastly inferior to A&M. If we have the talent and coaching to beat A&M, barring significant injury there is no left on our schedule that will give us the same adversity. We won't be playing in front of anything like the 12th man for the rest of the year. We won't be playing against anyone like Manziel. Nor will we encounter any coaching or physicality/speed that Sumlin and Jackson (A&M's Strength and Conditioning Coach) will offer. That's the good thing and bad thing about this game. Lose and we only do what most have projected so there isn't a false sense of expectations. Win, well like I said, we no longer have any excuse to lose any other game on our schedule and I personally believe that this team can succeed under that pressure. I don't expect us to win, but I want us to win just becuase this program needs to demonstrate that they have what it takes (and they do) and that they have a huge chip on their shoulder (they most definitely do).
remember when Arkansas State knocked off the Aggies in their opener? Remember Appy State beating Michigan in their opener? The first game of the year is when you want to take on the biggest fish on your schedule.

Thanks!
On a side note, when was the last time a large number of people were so optimistic leading into the season? Good stuff.

And winning the first game doesn't have to be the highlight of the season. Appalachian State went on to win the FCS championship that season (beating a team led by a QB by the name of Flacco).
But yeah, those upsets sure appear to happen then. Although is that more a factor of when OOC games are played? September is full of them, and much more rare in October and November.
Sat in middle of many Aggies who surrounded other fans, and Ags lost. No problems, of course they did not get beat by a Rice. Stubhub has tickets in 100 and in 500, upper level endzone.. From what I can tell those and behind the visiting band on the goal line are visiting designated sections. Investors have bought many of their season tickets and will resale and never have seen any problems with visitors, just do not plan on sitting down if on east side.
As to the game, if our guys and coaches do not prepare to win any ball game we play, we ought to pack it in. Of course they know reality, but there is always that chance that the other team stinks it up, and you capitalize on it.

I've attended several games at Kyle Field in the past, including 1980 which was our last win over the Aggies.
I can honestly say that I was always treated well and never encountered rude behavior toward me and any group I was with.
I had less trouble at any game I attended at Kyle Field than any game I've ever attended in Austin. There, it didn't matter if it was close or we were down by 50, there were obnoxious fans that paid more attention to heckling Rice fans than their own team. (Admittedly, this was a minority, but they were loud, and seemed to seek out the visiting section).
I also need to add that the time frame here was the 1980's by and large.
So things may have changed. My perceptions haven't (yet).
