RE: Rice vs aTm - 2013
I have been to many games there as both my daughters have been there since 2007. Sprinkled around us were visiting fans, and all were very well behaved except UT fans who I had to ask to quit cursing. My daughters say there are drunks and rowdies in student section, but wo wants to sit there? And those are not Corps kids.
My junior year when we played LSU, Baker pushed their old red bus to stadium and partied with the LSU fans all week. We tied them 10-10 and they were actually not very nice after the game.

RE: Rice vs aTm - 2013
Worst memory...October 1986.

A&M beating Rice 38-6 at Kyle Field. A&M has the ball with less than a minute left in 4Q at midfield and rather than run clock out to take a knee...Jackie S. calls on Kevin Murray to throw a deep pass to Rod Bernstein for a late score and go on to win 45-6 (and was play action at that). The classic 'run up the score w/ zero class' move.... I thought Jerry Berndt was going to punch Sherrill at the 50-yd line. Hope we get a chance for some payback...

I've attended several games at Kyle Field in the past, including 1980 which was our last win over the Aggies.

I can honestly say that I was always treated well and never encountered rude behavior toward me and any group I was with.

I had less trouble at any game I attended at Kyle Field than any game I've ever attended in Austin. There, it didn't matter if it was close or we were down by 50, there were obnoxious fans that paid more attention to heckling Rice fans than their own team. (Admittedly, this was a minority, but they were loud, and seemed to seek out the visiting section).

I also need to add that the time frame here was the 1980's by and large.

So things may have changed. My perceptions haven't (yet).

Last time I saw Rice at Kyle field, we got chased off the field by sword-wielding "CT's" (corp turds - not my term, but that used by Aggies). That was then followed by a DEAFENING roar of "BEAT THE HELL OUT OF RICE!" That's my lasting perception.
Of course, the night before: we suds their fountain, soaked the crowd outside the campus strip of bars (Dixie Chicken, etc.) with fire extinguishers, soaked many CT's with same, and paraded a huge blue eATMe flag around outside yell practice. I'm just glad to be alive.

A&M's spring game is today. Broadcast now on ESPN. Chris Fowler pegged the opener as TAMU's toughest non-conference game (others are SHSU, SMU, UTEP). Mentioned the big bowl win, mentioned the 19 returning starters, mentioned the history with Sumlin having just been at Houston.

In the same time frame, I remember a story in the Houston Post about Murray complaining that Rice players spit on him while in the pile. I wonder if one was retribution for the other. I never recalled either Murray or Sherrill as being someone I regarded as a classy individual, regardless of what the truth was in those incidents.

1977: halftime: ATM 35, Rice 28...

Red Baker Bus had provided proper lubrication of a bus load of Rice students.

Tommy Kramer was superb.

George Woodard unfortunately was unstoppable.

As halftime ended, the well lubricated Rice fans led by the Rally Club went onto Kyle Field to form a victory line to honor the superb performance of the Owl Air Corps.

The Aggie seniors drew their swords and forced the Rice victory line off the field.

This was one year before the Aggies gained notoriety for pulling the same stunt on SMU cheerleaders.

UT fans are obnoxious. Not only do they have a sense of entitlement, many never even attended UT.

In 2008, Chase Clement's parents attended the Rice/UT game in Rice colors honoring their son. They are long time UT season ticket holders. They were heckled. (I do acknowledge the other UT fans in the same section came to the "defense" of them...)

I can say with some certainty that the SMU cheerleader - Cadet with sword drawn incident occurred in 1981.

RE: Rice vs aTm - 2013
I agree that fans are better behaved at Kyle Field than at Austin.
I have seen an Aggie Tshirt that said
If someone is wearing an Aggie shirt they went to A&M
If they wear a UT shirt they went to Wal Mart
and usually the ones that did not go to school there have the greatest sense of entitlement since they picked to be a UT to ride the coat-tails of a winning program.

I saw the Rice-UT game at Austin two years ago and and one frat boy shouted Obscenity Rice. There were no other shows of discourtesy by anyone else.

What really bothers me about UT fans is in the past I have heard them booing their own team when things are not going great. The Twelveth Man tradition at A&M prohibits Aggies from doing that since they are not even supposed to leave the game early when the Aggies are greatly outscored.

I consider the Cougar fans to be even worse than the Longhorn fans.
I stopped wanting to go to Robertson for the Rice games because the Cougar fans resent Rice and like to rub it in when they are winning.

I know LSU has a bad reputation but I had no trouble when I went to the 1979 Rice game at Baton Rouge but the Tigers had no trouble beating Rice that year. In 1972 at Rice, there were several LSU fans wandering around the concourse trying to pick a fight. The Tigers only won 12-6 that year.

I had been to all the stadiums in the old SWC and the Superdome for Tulane v Rice and I have not had any problems in the rest of them. I have been going to games for over 50 years. The first game I remember is my parents took me to Kyle Field on a charter train in 1959 to see A&M play Baylor. They started taking me to Rice home games about the same time.

A&M has a long-time tradition that no one except official participants
are allowed on the field except they have a senior line right before the start of the second half. They probably did not like having the fountain soaped since the Corps fish get to throw the yell leaders in the fountain after an A&M win. I went to graduate school at A&M so I know their traditions.

Sounds like we were nearly dropped from the schedule:

edit: Decided to move this from the other thread since that one is trying to deal more with strategy for the game.

Too bad for A&M. Louisville would've been a sure win for John-John Football and his lackies. Instead they're locked into a sure loss. Sorry, Aggie. Suck it.

It is rare to find a roofing crew without one or two in Longhorn gear.

Well the Aggies pulled swords in 1977 and 1981. Still a very unfriendly way to attempt to intimidate your guests.

'Hard to believe that even in 1977, 1981, whatever, drawing of swords on unarmed and non-threatening people did not result in some sort of legal charges. Why do they even have those swords anyway? If a regular perosn walked around wearing one of those there would be some questions asked at very least, wouldn't there?
