Playoff $$$ Payout Maxes Out at 12 Teams.
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...evenue-cap

10 team conference would get $10 million
11 team conference would get $11 million
Any one at 12 or more members has to split $12 million.

More members beyond 12 = less playoff $$$ for each school in that conference.

RE: Playoff $$$ Payout Maxes Out at 12 Teams.
The only reason for CUSA to go beyond 12, or any league for that matter is if increases the bottom line.

Of course, there are two ways to increase the bottom line. (1) Increase revenues; (2) Decrease expenditures.

Clearly going above 12 decreases Playoff money revenue. But, is it offset by increasing TV revenue and decreasing travel expenditures. I don't have enough details to answer that.

Even though I want the Cajuns in CUSA, Banowsky would not being doing teams in the league a service unless the bottom line increased.

I think the idea is to decrease travel expense to the point that it make sense.

CUSA is at 14. That means each gets $857,142 in playoff money.

At 16 teams, each team would get $750,000 in playoff money.

That means addition of 16 creates a $157,142 gap. Would that be made up between any increased TV revenue and travel savings? If it were the right teams - probably. Especially if it helped raise the conference in the end of the year conference payouts.

That's under the assumption that ESPN/FOX/CBS would pay more money if we had more teams. Sorry guys, I don't think ULL or Ark St are going to move the needle much. More teams would do nothing at this point but reduce payouts to the current teams.

You still aren't considering decreased costs. How much would bussing non-revenue sports to Ruston, Lafayette etc. save USM in a year.

Plus, let's assume, as a safe estimate, that the Cajuns and Bull Dogs bring 1,000 more people to a game at USM than a team in the eastern division.

That's 35K in more revenue to USM than another team. Not too mention money spent on concessions, etc.

I agree. I was fine with expanding before I learned that the payout was capped at 12 teams, but diluting the television payout AND the playoff payout combined for a fairly substantial drop in revenue. Enough that it probably wouldn't be recouped by decreased travel expenses anyway.

This is the entire question . . . what amount of schools makes sense from a bottom line standpoint.

Revenue (TV + playoff + ticket sales) - expenses (travel costs) = Bottom Line

What combination of schools 10-16 gets you there.

Again, with schools that have 20-30 million dollar budgets, how hard is it to find $157,000 in expenses?

If you add ULL and stAte, everybody probably saves that in travel costs alone...

Saying ban-ban has downs is an insult to those who have downs.

For everyone who wants to keep gobnling up teams take a look @ the big 12. they are sitting @10 teams & making more than any other conference @ about $30mil per team. They understand the more mouths to feed the less $$$ for everyone else.

if you only have 2 pizzas to feed you & your family durring the game do you invite the neighbor over to eat just because its a close walk & they can only bring a pack of saltines?

Why does C*USA have to raid for more football schools to get to 16?

Football travel costs are not our problem, it is the Olympic sports. If we don't pay them them the football money we don't split the pie.

RE: Playoff $$$ Payout Maxes Out at 12 Teams.
1. In a conference model that already requires every team to play as many of the other league members as possible in olympic sports every year, how is adding more teams going to reduce travel costs? In other words, how does playing 14 teams once and one team twice actually manage to decrease costs in basketball versus 10 teams once and three teams twice? Reduced travel costs only make sense if you are trading a trip to Miami or El Paso for that trip to Lafayette. If you still have to go to Miami or El Paso, you aren't saving much, if anything.

2. TV revenues are not going to increase. Our network partners are happy with our current inventory. They aren't going to pay for more inventory just because we add it. Where, then, are people getting the idea that tv revenue will increase?

3. Assuming you will have greater ticket sales depends heavily on the secondary assumption that closer teams will boost ticket sales. In Southern Miss's case, this is unlikely. History has shown that better and tougher opponents on the field would generate increased ticket sales at Southern Miss. Adding more teams does not improve this situation. In fact, since every conference must finish .500 at the end of the year, it actually dilutes the chances of having a good opponent that will generate additional ticket sales.

4. There are only two points where additional expansion makes sense right now: The first is added bowl revenue. Increasing the number of teams increases the chances we will have more bowl-eligible teams. Therefore, if it means we can earn more money for the conference as a whole, the conference may expand with this goal in mind. This applies doubly to NCAA Tournament credits. The problem with this line of reasoning lies in the accrued additional expenses argument. In other words, the added bowls and tournament credits have to more than offset the losses in revenue in other places as well as the expenses accrued by the teams traveling to play in these additional games. In other words, you can't add deadweight and come out ahead.

5. To offset future conference losses. This is the weaker of the two positive arguments. Basically, you have to assume that realignment is not done and will hit this conference sooner rather than later. The problem here is who is going to go, when are they going to go, and where are they going? Without knowing those things ahead of time, it is difficult to know who to add, when to add, or where to add.

could be that the thought is to add now because in two or three years when the ACC gets raided for four teams and they take four from the AAC who then takes four from CUSA no sunbelt is willing to make the move and CUSA moves down to the weakest conference with the smallest payout and the worst TV contract.
