Who knows RT @Stumpbuster9: @DanWolken If all of this had broken prior to gaining entrance to B1G, would Rutgers still have received invite?

It looks even worse now the second video with the assistant coach looking even worse than Rice. Bobby Knight seemed like a Sunday school teacher next to Them. AD should be fired as well as Prez. Bad cover up as well as hurting student athletes chances at success.

Where was the cover up? Back in December, the school announced what happened and promptly issued a series of corrective and punitive actions against Rice. Now, I do think they mishandled this in a number of ways, but in no way do I see a cover up or any wrongful intent. If it were me I would have released the tapes publicly myself then (first rule of damage control, get the story out there and control the narrative) and I would have fired Rice and Martelli immediately.

Rice and Martelli definitely had to go. No doubt about that. Pernetti bungled things, but he doesn't deserve to be fired. Barchi who has been on the job for barely 6 months at this point definitely doesn't deserve to be fired. General Counsel who has been fired probably deserved to be fired.

RE: Tim Pernetti out as Rutgers AD
Your AD comes to you and essentially says "We have this video of our BBall coach acting inappropriately. So, we're taking the unprecedented step of suspending him for 3 games and fining him $50 grand. And, we're also insisting he get counseling. You cool with that, Prez?"

You demand to see the tape. It could be something that legally puts the school at risk.

His willful ignorance... his apparent 'the less I know, the better' attitude proves him to be unfit for that job.

Agreed. Its not like Pernetti never took action either. Retarded overreaction by the faculty.

From the president's perspective it was probably "let's see. I'm joining the Big Ten soon, and I've got a scandal on my hands with my bball coaches. Probably the best thing to do is to fire my AD and my bball coaches involved in the scandal."

From faculty's perspective it was probably, "Darn that AD for foiling our efforts (Rutgers 1000 or whatever that movement was for Rutgers to drop all sports) to become Ivy League. We'll show 'em. We'll have him fired for this scandal."

RE: Tim Pernetti out as Rutgers AD
To determine whether TP should have been fired (or forced to resign), let's review the facts:

1. TP sees the tapes for the first time in December.
2. TP immediately escalates - involves the general counsel and also retains outside counsel to do an investigation an presumably also advises others in the RU administration.
3. Both the general counsel and outside counsel advise RU that there is not enough evidence to fire Rice for cause. As ridiculous as this may seem, TP has to rely on this advice and so the only choice would be for RU to fire Rice and eat the contract. This would be a very difficult choice for a university in the financial condition that RU is in and one I'm not even sure TP could make.
4. TP discusses the situation with the Prez and at least 3 RU Board members review the tape.
5. All involved sign off on suspending Rice and imposing the other conditions. I assume it was decided that, given RU's financial condition, this was the best way to move forward as the measures instituted (monitors, anger control counseling etc) protected the players.

Now, we can all agree that the wrong decision was made, however, the question is whether TP is responsible enough to have been terminated. IMO, based on these facts the clear answser is TP should not have been terminated (or forced to resign). I guess it's possible there is more to the story, but so far this is all that has come out.

RE: Tim Pernetti out as Rutgers AD
1.) Pernetti needed to go. This isn't even a tough call.

There is no way that any reasonable person in authority there could have possibly looked at those tapes and come up with what amounted to a slap on the wrist for both Rice and Martelli. If that includes BOT members and the president too then so be it. The treatment of young people in those videos was simply unacceptable by any standard and anyone who condones it does not belong in a decision making capacity at an academic institution. Period.

This isn't about doing right by Rice or Martelli or any of the other people who bullied these kids or who allowed bullies to abuse them under their watch. The priority should always be in protecting young people from abuse and taking swift and authoritative action against those who perpetrate said abuse.

And to wait until ESPN filed a FOI request to release the tapes, that too was MORONIC.

The coaches' behavior was LUDICROUSLY inappropriate in those tapes and neither of them should ever set foot in a high school gymnasium - let alone a college arena - ever again.

People foolishly say, "Some kids need that." The decry this as the "Wussification of 'Murica" and all this other nonsense.

Bullschitt! No kid needs to be treated like that. The only two people that needed that were those two little midgets with Napoleon complexes.

2.) My guess is that the next revelation to come out will be that the "independent investigation" that Pernetti commissioned in the wake of the Rice allegations was flimsy from the start and not so independent after all.

My guess is that ESPN knows this and has from the start. That is what ultimately sank Pernetti - as well it should have.

3.) I still have no idea why Pernetti - a veteran of television - would agree to go on Outside The Lines? That bone-headed decision was incredibly foolish and arrogant of him and it ultimately cost him his job and perhaps his career.

4.) Had this scandal broken in December it would have had no impact on the Big Ten's decision to add Rutgers. Rutgers wasn't chosen for his achievements or its personalities. It was chosen for its potential to deliver cable dollars.

That's all very logical. I guess we don't know if Pernetti had all the tapes, or if he did and withheld some of the tapes from the investigators. I just have a hard time believing that someone (AD or counsel) could look at a video of a coach physically abusing his players in practice and determine that there was no contract mechanism to fire him. I've known executives who've been fired for less contact than Rice instigated on his players.

RE: Tim Pernetti out as Rutgers AD
Further, it has been my experience that when someone calls someone a "fiery competitor" that is almost always a euphemism for the words "insufferable arsehole who works in sports."

I like competitors - hell, I'm competitive myself. However, you can be competitive w/o being a flaming arsehole as Rice and Martelli were in those myriad videos. Remember, this was absolutely a pattern of abuse - not a singular bad day at the office.

Also, it doesn't take a lawyer to see that what those two idiots were doing was wrong and needed to be stopped permanently - not through half measures and token slaps on the wrists. Sometimes leadership is difficult but necessary.

Protecting Rutgers University and its student-athletes is the priority here. There is no way that the dismissal/forced resignation of some small fish like Rice and some no-name assistant coach were going to stop the bleeding. People across the country saw this behavior and were outraged by it. They also now know that people in authority there also saw it and did very little about it (comparatively). They wanted heads to roll - meaningful heads. And, good, bad or indifferent, the public usually gets what it wants. In this instance I agree with the consensus.

That said, I think Pernetti is enough. I do not believe that members of the BOT or the president need to join him in the unemployment line. This should allow RU to move on from this embarrassing and damaging chapter. However, that was probably not going to happen as long as Pernetti was in charge in New Brunswick.

Here's Pernetii's Letter of Resignation

Quote:As you know, my first instincts when I saw the videotape of Coach Rice's behavior was to fire him immediately. However, Rutgers decided to follow a process involving university lawyers, human resources professionals, and outside counsel. Following review of the independent investigative report, the consensus was that university policy would not justify dismissal. I have admitted my role in, and regret for, that decision, and wish that I had the opportunity to go back and override it for the sake of everyone involved.

I'm sorry, but I just don't buy the "I couldn't fire him" line. What has changed legally between December and now that Rice could be fired now, but not then?
