Most online newspapers have comment sections as bad if not worse. Birmingham is not unique in its ignorance. The anoniminity of comment sections brings out the dredges of society and allows people to show themselves at their worst.

I got into an argument with a guy on Facebook saying the same crap the other day, and he had his full name and picture displayed and everything. This is Alabama. People don't care.

If they switched to Facebook comments, it would certainly help. Yes, a lot of people (and a few on this message board) don't see anything wrong with racist, homophobic, or sexist comments but it would cut down on a LOT of the crap on al.com
