U of M president Dr. Shirley Raines said the choice of American Athletic Conference was unanimous.

“The presidents and athletic directors worked closely with conference officials, who also sought input from the major television networks, public relations professionals and focus groups,” Raines said. “This inclusive process was important.”


U of M athletic director Tom Bowen said he and other league officials were in agreement that American Athletic Conference “was a dynamic and representative name.”

If they were going this direction then AAA would have been better. I could have gotten on board with the "tripA" American Athletic Association.

ECU is already stuck in the middle of the ACC in NC. This makes it even worse being in the AAC. I can already hear the NCSU and UNC fans riding our asses over this.

This sucks on multiple levels.

Oh well....It is just a damn name. Not the end of the world.

It is unorginal and sounds like ACC. My question is who voted for it? There are other leagues now that use "America-Amercian" in its name. Big disappointment.

When I first heard the AAC I was like crap, then when they said it would be known as "The American" I was like hmmm, not bad. Instant switch. I actually like it better than all the other options that came about. In a year it won't matter anyway, people will have accepted it just like they did Conference USA.

"The American" has a lot better ring to it IMO though. More than that I mean seriously how can you hate on a conference called "The American". That's a word that gives a lot of people pride and positivity and a general good feeling so I think compared to Metro(sexual?) or Big Metro or whatever other crap they could have came up with they actually did well. It's an easy name to sell and good to be associated with.

It fit's, it's sounds big, and it's a positive word that inspires something to nearly every non nut job out there. I call it a win on the naming.

That's actually a really good starting point for a logo design. The Giant A concept, I mean. Probably better than the clip-art flag with Comic Sans and Papyrus text we're gonna end up with.
