Interesting. I'm not sure what some of those stats meant. I'm a basketball guy first.

Things that have to improve to be more successful this upcoming season:

The defense has to pressure the QB.
Austin Brown has to stop getting sacked.
Punt coverage has to improve significantly.

I'm sure we'll have fun screaming about this one again. He held the ball way too long sometimes and other times he didn't even have time to throw it away before he got plastered by the D.

One of the good things about Coach leaving him in to get beat on last season is that it teaches the virtue of knowing to get the ball out of there. AB needs to work on his recognition and read progression, but getting hell beat out of you as a freshman tends to lead to being older and wiser as a Junior and Senior.

Austin Brown hadn't played in a real live football game in two years when he took over last year, and the time before that was high school ball.

I bet the game slows down for him a lot this year.

Even with some unknowns at receiver, I worry much more about defense than offense this year.

And he needs to remember, checking down to the delayed draw or releasing the TE into a route in the face of a blitz are good ideas.

Very good read, although I do have one nit to pick.

Quote:Is Williams the man to take UAB beyond that?

I'm fairly certain that he is talking about McGee here.

Quote:UAB was last in the country in opponent punt returns.

Plus we didn't give up any TDs, so there are any long returns that skew the numbers. We were consistently terrible in that department. We need to clean that up immediately. Every extra yard the opposing offense has to earn will help the defense out.

Quote:2013 Conference USA football previews, from worst to first

He has us ranked above FAU, UTSA, and Tulane for 11th in the conference. I'm surprised he has us behind UTEP and FIU with their interesting HC hires.

Hasn't it been that way for more than a decade?

I think the defense will be much improved. That said it couldn't have been any worse the last few years. I like our size and speed. It looks to be headed in the right direction.

With a more experienced line, we should be able to pound the rock, which will make Brown's life easier.

Just remember the fourth quarter of the Marshall and USM games. Tenuous lead, getting late. Grind the clock down and finish them.

In the words of Lyndon Johnson, "It's like a west Texas dust storm. You can't run, you can't hide, and you can't make it stop."

At the Marshall game, I yelled at their bench, "Hey, Holladay! Number five's gonna get it!"

Some woman Herd fan looked up at me and yelled, "Thank you! I didn't think he'd figure it out!" 03-lol

You could have cost us the game by divulging the strategy. 01-lauramac2

Knowing what's coming, and being able to do something about it are two different things, as Marshall demonstrated. 03-lmfao
