RE: Official Coaching Search/Rumors Thread
Here's a couple of Big Fish, former D1 HC names who are on the market. For this situation, absolute, definite uber longshots...

Tommy Bowden - Former Clemson HC, son of you know who. Hasn't coached since 2008. Was linked to the USF opening, didn't pan out. Working as an analyst for Fox Sports South. Doubt he would listen, would ask anyways. Rather hear a no than never gauge at all.

Houston Nutt - Former Arkansas/Ole Miss HC. Current CBS analyst. Same as Bowden, worth a call.

Randy Shannon - former Miami HC, current LB coach at Arkansas. Looks like the NCAA crapped the bed with Miami so doubt he would be a major risk. Doubt he would take a pay cut, but he may be interested in running his own program again. ... Makes $315,000 a year at Arkansas

.......

Another guy I like is Tyrone Nix - Co-DC at MTSU. Was DC at South Carolina and Ole Miss. Was a finalist for the Broyles Award twice (Southern Miss, Ole Miss). Was in play for Southern Miss job. Would get a raise and HC opp...

There is a difference between Witten as a head coach and Witten as an assistant.

Still, I don't think Witten would necessarily be a good college assistant.

I'm just anti bringing him in altogether. I know he's not "The other sister" and wouldn't make those mistakes, but bringing him in at any capacity speaks of that "townie" mentality you hate Pitt. Then there's the whole momma in the stands thing (think Jerry Springer, or atleast that's how she acted with Ryan on the sidelines).
The question with involving that family is would the positives outweigh the negatives? I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't think it does.

Again don't see how you got I was championing Shawn for a job, which turned into a Witten hate-fest, ... wasn't the case at all...was making an off handed local tie note to a different coach I mentioned (Dan Brooks). 04-chairshot

Either way, and I may be wrong by saying this, I don't know if he'd even be interested in a college job seeing he has a sure-fire Division I BCS program level running back on that team at Elizabethton the next two seasons and a real shot at Alcoa and CAK with this kid in the backfield:

RE: Official Coaching Search/Rumors Thread
Kind of like Tennessee High had the real shot at Maryville the year Cade Thompson beat them with a concussion, in the first half...
I get you're not championing him, but it goes back to the "hire George Pitts" mentality that the area has. Heck, even Nashville has a little bit with everyone trying to get Drew Maddux hired at Lipscomb from CPA.
I don't necessarily hate the guy, I just don't think he's right for a startup program trying to prove it's not going to halfway do things or believe the local high school guy is qualified to run an FCS championship level program that could potentially transition to FBS. You brought the name up as someone "interesting to note," because of the UT/Dan Brooks tie in. I mean it's interesting to note that Kevin Dyson and Robbie Caldwell live in the same county, but I can promise you I wouldn't want Coach Dyson in Johnson City for any reason.
And don't think as an attack, but why the re-treads? All the coaches you mentioned underachieved and are out of work for a reason. The only one that would remotely make sense is Houston Nutt, and only because he started the whole Boise State thing.
It goes to the expectations that I mentioned in the coaches performance thread, have the expectation that you're going to bring someone who will not only compete for, but win championships. As a Buc fan, I'm over our programs being mediocre, and I damn sure don't want to see football flounder around .500.

Does anyone know if Dr. Sander is speaking with any of these people? They look like some good candidates and I am sure there are good people we have not heard of yet. Has Dr. Sander got his list of 8 to 10 names yet? The suspense is killing me!

I know what you mean...its too quiet...with that being said one of the football coaches at the school I work at is good friends with Billy Taylor (his son plays for TN Tech) and he had mentioned that he spoke with Taylor and that he was very interested. I just don't know how much ETSU is interested in Taylor. I think most of the names that I've read in this thread are legit. I'm anxious like everyone else though!

It is quiet. ETSU is in a bit of pickle. Bottom line is nobody wants to work for an interim A.D. in any situation, and most people in coaching circles in all sports know what an incompetent pile of mule crap the water buffalo is, and does just enough to be in the way.
They really need a permanent A.D. in place, along with a new SWA, and they need it soon.

RE: Official Coaching Search/Rumors Thread
With it being obvious that Fulmer is pulling the rope in the coaching search, I would be surprised if the first guy he brings to the administration isn't Randy Sanders, who is now at FSU. He was a long time coach at UT under Fulmer, and one of his favorites. But he may not be interested as he makes more at FSU than a FCS program wants to pay a head coach.

If he isn't interested, don't go to sleep on the name of David Bennett. They need someone that knows how to get a football program off the ground. Bennett started the program at Coastal Carolina about a decade ago. Won 4 Big South Championships, and earned two FCS playoff berths.

He is. But don't let that fool you. Bennett is a very smart guy. But his persona is sort of like Danny Ford with a sense of humor. He was always entertaining for the press. That particular incident went viral. In actuality it was meant for one player. Josh Norman. He was their star cornerback who is now playing for the Carolina Panthers. But at that time was much more interested in how he looked than how he played. But Bennett would be a perfect fit. First off, he has a track record of building a successful program from scratch. Secondly, he would be a perfect fit with alumni, and the fan base. When at Coastal Carolina, he was probably the most popular person in the Myrtle Beach area. Certainly the most popular person associated with Coastal. I know he is on the radar in Johnson City. So don't be surprised if he becomes a player in the search. But like I say, I think it will be Sander's to turn down before anyone else comes to the table.

I predict the new head football coach will be Fulmer and a donor will agree to pay his full salary of $500,000 per year. 07-coffee3 You never know I could be right.
