Well I hope so. That will be the most positive spin. Overall I am over the shock that he is ONLY the #2 guy from Idaho....after all we don't worry about the number of *'s...right?

That is true. Grants and Athletics can get us there.

With you on that. He seems business savy and if the university wants to continue to grow, which is what they keep saying, they will need to lower reliance on funding from the sad state that is Illinois to get there.

Athletics is naturally one way to market a school and bring in private funds. Idaho has crappy facilities and is in the middle of nowhere but they have managed to hang-on in FBS for a lot longer than they probably should have so I don't think athletics will be backburned. Especially after the momentum of the past year, it would be a recipe for disaster for a new president to come in touting how the universty needs to rely less on state funding and then alienate many of the people that can help bridge that gap.

To me it isn't a flashy hire but fundamentally appears sounds.

I also think we will get a better idea of how committed he is to athletics once we hire our next AD.

Somebody hit on it earlier. My exepctation is that we would hire a proven President from Idaho not the Provost. I do not set my NIU sights on taking the 2nd chair from a smaller university. I can not for the life of me figure out why you needed a top secret process to end up with what I consider a mediocre candidate. Not inspiring at all. We will fall futher behind ISU now in relevance in the state.

I'm not very bright. I went to a state school. I read this three times and still asked, 'What the f*^k do the Giants and the A's have to do with NIU funding itself?"

I'll be heading home on the short bus, now.

Initially, it sounds as if the selection pool was quite thin.

There is more to NIU than football.
We will know in 5 years how good he is.

I think folks are putting too much stock in where he came from. Perhaps he beat out folks from bigger more prestigious schools.

If I understand correctly President Peters was part of the selection process. Perhaps it was a thin pool, but I dont think for a second that NIU would offer the position to someone who was not highly motivated and very qualified.

No kidding. They picked a president, not a linebacker.

Donations from athletic boosters to athletics and the individual colleges, not to mention increased revenue from better attendence etc. As for grants, research grants help universities fund all sorts of crazy research that help the universitie's brand and can create jobs. If not maybe I should 03-banghead more.
