Apparently, the first Chasing Omaha projections have Rice as the #3 seed in a Norman Regional.

I thnk if we win the CUSA tournment we will be hosting a Regional. if Houston wins, they will be hosting a Regional. I do not see us or Houston hosting a Super Regionals. Our future schedule is too weak.

It's always amazing to me the teams with multiple all-stars. It's been awhile since Rice has had that abundance.

BTW, in Kendall Roger's latest Power Rankings (premium content only), Austin Kubitza was ranked #8 amongst starting pitchers and (according to a back-and-forth facebook exchange with Kendall) both Zech Lemond and Geoff Perrott were the first relief pitcher and catcher out of his Top 10 rankings at each position.

Kendall Rogers Walt -- Glad you mentioned Geoff. I like his overall skill set, and was actually, as I was thumbing through catchers, a little surprised he was hitting at that high of a clip. FWIW, Lemond was my first pitcher out as well. Hated to leave him out because I love his overall game, but the relief pitches were just silly stacked.

• The reason for the Owls OoC "regional schedule" is to support regional recruiting and local rivalries.
• Mid-week games are not necessary to assure a trip to the CWS. Winning the conference tourney does this. I certainly don't mean Rice does not play to win, but that these games are "laboratories" to groom the team for CWS meaningful games.
  

Yes, I see Stanford and Baylor ranked behind Rice, but ... Given our fall in RPI rankings, should Rice schedule more aggressively outside Texas ? I don't think the opponent's on-field performance would be appreciably different, but the RPI might bounce higher with a "stronger" OoC schedule.

Or is RPI meaningless ?

1. Given the quality and consistency of the Rice baseball program, we don't require the automatic bid to make the post-season or get to Omaha. Mid-week games are not "laboratories", as they greatly affect RPI and team momentum.

2. Rice's poor RPI this year has absolutely nothing to do with scheduling in-state mid-week games (which have actually improved the RPI). Rather, the low RPI is a direct result of scheduling Harvard and the unexpectedly poor seasons being had by Hawaii and LaTech, not to mention the down year for CUSA.

It also seems to me that Rice used to squeeze TCU a little in scheduling. Well, it seems to me that Rice is now getting squeezed by UT, A$M, and Baylor. This does not help the quality of mid-week games, thus potentially damaging RPI to some extent.

I don't know if the squeeze is real or imagined, but adding those mid-week games might have helped RPI this year.

I would really love to play UT, A$M, Baylor, and/or TCU in an early season weekend series to rotate between the two school each year. As a fan, this would add to my early season interest. My guess would be that UT, A$M, Baylor and TCU would not be as keen to schedule such a home and home series.
