South End Zone
Can someone in DeKalb take some pictures of the south end zone? We've heard there's a 3.3 million dollar scoreboard coming and that it will be at least twice as wide as the current scoreboard. We've also heard that there will be electronic ad boards on the front of the sideline stands and that those will cost an additional 650,000 dollars. I don't think anyone has seen any schematics for the scoreboard yet. I had heard much earlier that they were going to add a berm underneath the scoreboard too. Someone earlier posted a picture of the Wake Forest scoreboard which supposedly cost less that ours will, and it looked fantastic. I'm hoping they will add as big a berm as possible from east stands to west stands to close off the south side and make it feel more like a bowl. Done right, this would also add room for NIU to claim additional seating on the hillside for another 2000 plus fans. I've been to a number of schools where sitting on such a hillside is common and a cheaper seat. Hoping that the absence of a Pres. and AD doesn't delay or reduce this great opportunity.

RE: South End Zone
There is a code issue with building an entirely new scoreboard (possibly because of how close it is to the road/sidewalk)...so the old steel structure will have to be reused. AKA don't expect anything like the WF board.

I believe that the "twice the current size" comments is about our current video screen itself not the entire scoreboard. I do expect it to be full HD.

Yes $650k was approved by the BOT a few weeks ago for a new sound system and ribbon screens on the lower face of the stadium.

The only sketches that have been seen publicly are of the new stairs/platform behind the current scoreboard. This was a big safety issue that is getting corrected so that is great.

The rumored 3.3mil includes 2 scoreboards and the control center. The second scoreboard will be in the Convo.

The berm rumor has seemed to have fizzled when they found out that there were code issues with the board. I hope that something is done so we can use the area for seating so we can afford more name teams to play in DeKalb.

Based on what I see online bidding is currently going on for all aspects of the project...construction, electrical work and the board itself.

RE: South End Zone
I don't see how you'd even get 1000 people in the south endzone without putting in bleachers. So I doubt that would improve our situation for getting teams to DeKalb.

Agree...getting 1000 more paying for a skybox seat would help more.

RE: South End Zone
Thanks for the info. I heard similar comments about code issues when the IPF was being designed. Hope more can be done. I've been at a number of FBS stadiums with berms and the capacity numbers are always inflated. I believe the NCAA has a seat size for instance of 18" and you can calculate how many seats that will accomodate in any stands you build. If the field is 50 yards wide, that's 100 seats per row, so to get to 1000 you would need ten rows. I was hoping a berm could go from where the stands end on each side. Regardless of how many people actually sit there, I know schools add the max number of estimated seats to their capacity. Done right a berm affords an opportunity for families to take their kids on the berm to picnic, run around, etc.. My son went to Missouri and their one end is designed to scoop around from stand to stand with decorative rocks in the middle and they get a ton of people sitting and standing at that end for big games. Our road situation is obviously an obstacle, but I don't see why you couldn't close it off as was done on the west side. Some day I'd like to see stand built over the roadway, but that won't happen in my lifetime.

It must have something to do with the proximity of the scoreboard to the sidewalk. My guess is there is a setback requirement that cant be met. That said Im surprised they could not work something out.

Again this is not confirmed though I seem to remember that the info was posted by someone I would consider reliable.

I would love for that to happen again. 2003 for Iowa st quite a few of the balcony's were full. That was a great day. I even remember a few people who climbed the trees so they could see the game.

The Lincolnshire owners, who get a percentage of Huskie Stadium gate receipts, reportedly will file suit because the new scoreboard will block the view from the balconies.

Technically, he's mocking the wrigleyville rooftop owners & surrounding wrigleyville elitists.

April Fool, but you probably figured that. While I am a Cubs fan, there's plenty to mock in Cubland.

Why would they? THere is no seating on the apartments roofs. I don't even think many(if any) people can even look into the stadium from their apartments now.

That's great stuff. I think the Akron endzone is all any of us are asking for.

Agree that is looks the best for our situation but the problem is that Akron's field is below the sidewalk by a good 15-20 feet.
