Rice's most successful spring sport...
...over the last two seasons extended its winning streak to 10 dual matches and its season record to 15-4 with wins over Cal State Northridge and Santa Clara this weekend. They have only two regular season matches remaining, and fortunately both are at home:
Sat Apr 6 at 11 AM v SMU
Sat Apr 13 at 11 AM v Utah
Meanwhile, the Rice men return to the friendly confines of Jake Hess on Wed Apr 3 for a doubleheader: UTSA at 1 pm and Prairie View at 5 pm. They are coming off a brutal stretch of taking on Texas, Tulsa and Oklahoma, all on the road. Their regular season ends at the Jake on Sun Apr 14 at 1 pm v SMU.

The women's tennis coach seems to have done an outstanding job. Hope we can keep her.

RE: Rice's most successful spring sport...
Why has Natalie's ranking not really improved all that much during her win streak? It is about 2X higher than where she finished last year. I know she scuffled out of the gate this season but she has beaten some much lower ranked opponents lately...today I think her opponent was around #26 and she beat her 6-0 6-3.

I have wondered that too. I haven't really analyzed but anecdotally it seems odd. Clearly a software issue!

ITA FAQ linked below.
http://www.itatennis.com/AwardsAndRankin...nkings.htm
During her current streak Beazant has mostly been matched against players ranked behind her. From a quick look at box scores her victory over then #28 Ellis of UT on MAR 2 may have been her most recent match against a player ranked ahead of her. Ellis has since dropped. For the rankings that came out MAR 26 the victory over Ellis would have been calculated as a win over the 42ND ranked player.
The win over #26 on Sunday will not be calculated in the rankings until the next release on APR 9.

Thanks...almost appears as if you beat #25 you don't get credit for it because you beating them drops them in the rankings and you get credit for beating them at their new lower ranking.

Coach Schmidt's latest update includes the following succinct invitation for this weekend. The second sentence is extremely well-phrased:
Quote:Our team will be back in action at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium THIS SATURDAY at 11:00am against #51 SMU. We have a rich tradition of competitive matches with SMU and are looking forward to another exciting match on Saturday.

Although Rice won the doubles point, the Owls lost 4 out of 6 first sets in singles, and SMU quickly squared match at 2-2 with momentum apparently in its favor. So this almost had the feel of a comeback victory. I understand that Zinko was facing match point in her second set, before rallying to force a third set. Although her court was the last to finish, you have to believe that her rally was some inspiration to Anicete on the next court (who won Rice's third point) and to Zimmerman (who was the clincher).

Agreed. I followed the match on Live Stats and it seemed to me that SMU was in the drivers seat for a while. The last two singles players dug deep and gutted it out. Really inspiring win.
