RE: Tulane @ Rice Thursday Game Thread
This was the all-around game we've been waiting for (albeit still room for improvement)-- strong starting pitching, outstanding defense, good offense (10 hits, 4 BBs) against an elite pitcher, and lock down relief by our closer. Yes, our offense is still frustratingly inefficient for the number of baserunners we had and total bases we racked up(though we did bunt much, much better today)...and AK continues to pitch to a very high pitch count and issues more free passes than he's been accustomed to, but this was a very well played games-- by both sides...and we got just enough clutch hits to support our strong pitching.

Game Ball #1: Austin Kubitza (W, 4-1, 6.0 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 5 BBs, 6 Ks) struggled with his command and issued far to many walks, but his stuff was virtually unhittable tonight.

Game Ball #2: Zech Lemond (Save #7, 2.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 BBs, 3 Ks) with his third consecutive dominant performance. Whatever ills or mechanical issues he had for a couple weeks there appear to be all worked out....and, boy, do we need him back pitching to his potential.

Game Ball #3: The offensive trio of Keenan Cook (3-3, sac bunt, SB, run scored), Geoff Perrott (2-3, double, sac bunt, RBI) and Skyler Ewing (2-3, double, SB, run scored). Cook has been on fire for over 2 weeks now, and has his AVG over .310, while Ewing had his 3rd consecutive productive game at the plate. As for Perrott, same old, same old-- the veteran has been a consistent on-base machine pretty much the whole season....and he did another excellent job handling the pitching staff tonight.

Huge first game of the series win against a very good pitcher, but we face another quality and experienced pitcher tomorrow in Sr RHP Byo. Let's clinch the series tomorrow. Go Owls!

Only dropping in periodically, as I'm preparing my words to say at my Grandma's funeral tomorrow in NY. Celebration of nearly 105 years of a very full and vibrant life (her birthday is in May). Fortunately, I saw her last just two weeks again when last in NY, and she was in both good health and spirits-- the perfect way to remember her by.

Sorry to hear about your Grandmother.

You certainly feel the loss, but it's hard to feel the sadness for someone who was nearly 105 years old-- winning golf tournaments into her 80s...and bridge matches until and including the day she suffered her stroke last week. Incredibly long, healthy (until the past several years), vibrant and fulfilling life....and she had her full mental capacity to the very end. If we could only be so lucky.

I only saw the last few innings, but team looked good. Easily could have had several more runs, as the offense was pretty unlucky on several balls hit with men in scoring position -- one sliding catch along the LF line, one rocket at the SS, Stringer's blast (which I thought was gone when he hit it) and perhaps another one or two.

Great news if true, though I suspect it will take him another week or so of practice will take another week or so before he is back at 3b.

I still miss my grandmother after 20+ years - she passed away at 103. Strangely and perhaps not appropriately, my inclination to respond to your post is to say congratulations for being able to have her in your life for so long (I was in my early 20s when my grandmother died) and for the fact that she remained healthy and most importantly lucid for so long.

RE: Tulane @ Rice Thursday Game Thread
I remember when my father was going downhill fast. We were told in April 2001 that he had somewhere between 6 weeks and 2 years, most likely around 6 months. I was taking my son to Australia for a month in mid-summer, and pretty much told my mom that if it happened while we were down there, we were not exactly going to be able to hop on the next plane and come home. So we worked out a plan to handle it. Part of it was for my son and me to go back Memorial Day weekend for what would very likely be the last time. My dad did not recognize me, which by then had become a frequent occurrence, but it was the first time that he had not recognized my son, his grandson. That shook us all up a bit.

The next week, I happened to go see the Pearl Harbor movie with Ben Affleck that had just come out. Not a great movie, some interesting action shots, but the love story they tried to work in didn't really fit. But the one thing that came from the love story was the kid, and in the last scene, the war is over, Affleck has gone back to crop dusting in Tennessee, and there is a Stearman parked in front of the house. He asks the kid if he wants to go flying, and they go for a ride.

As I watched that I thought, "That would be my father and me in 1953." I called my mom the next day, told her that I wasn't coming back until the funeral. I had seen the father I wanted to remember on the movie screen, and I wanted that to be my lasting memory, not the shell of his former self that he had become. My father passed in November (the 6 months was just about spot on), I went back for the funeral, of course, but had not been back in the interim. I have no regrets, no guilt, never in the slightest.

Probably not the right way to handle it for everyone, but it worked for me, my brother, and my mom, and I'm pretty sure for my dad as well.

Not inappropriate in the slightest. I consider myself lucky to have had at least one of my grandparents in my life for 56 years. On my father's side, I never knew my grandfather and my grandmother died when I was in my early teens (though I have very fond memories of growing up with her around). On my mother's side, my grandfather died at 94 back in '99. As for my Grandmother, I was fortunate enough to last see her when I visited a couple weeks ago-- we went out for lunch, and she was in good spirits, good health and still sharp as a whip. As I said at the funeral services earlier today, that's the way I will always remember her. I had absolutely no desire to see her lying in the hospital, unable to recognize or respond to me.

RE: Tulane @ Rice Thursday Game Thread
I went up to Weatherford earlier this week for the funeral of my uncle, Bill Coody. Coody was a member of the Texas Legislature's original "Dirty Thirty" and a perennial entry on Texas Monthly's "Ten Best" list in the late 70s-early 80s. I did my time at ut law during that period and was always close, seems almost umbilically tied, to Coody. Too, he was very close to my dad. When Coody came down to EB for my dad's funeral in 1992 he - ostensibly one of Texas' toughest - remained white faced and wall-eyed throughout. Twenty-one years later, when it was Coody's time, it all came rushing back, white faced and walleyed. It never completely goes away.

I actually envy you that you could make that decision. I feel compelled to "be there" for my mother or grandmother (in the case of my grandfather), even against their wishes and advice, and really don't think I did do them much of any good. It hurt when my grandfather didn't really want me around instead of my grandmother, but it was all a learning experience. He was a great influence in my life and I worshiped him ... I know he suffered in his last couple of years and it would be different if he wasn't in pain. I've had great-aunts, etc with alzheimers, but never someone so close.

That was the case with my grandmother as well. She was on her death bed and scared me because I thought that she had lost her senses, asking me in her thick yiddish accent "you are getting married?" - I wasn't anywhere close to that at the time. She sensed my shock, and asked me again "you will get married?", and I understood that was her last concern for me at the time, and I told her yes, I would...

That was pretty much the thing with my father. It was very obvious that he didn't want us around to see him in that state.

My decision would probably have been harder had I not already gone through a lot of the thought process in anticipation of the Australia trip.

But he and I had so damn much FUN flying on so many occasions that I still don't want to remember him any other way.
