COLUMN- ASU win a sign of brutal times to come

Looking for a sign as to how disjointed the 2004 season has been for the Rebels?

Try the pre-game entrance ritual. As if an indicator of the sloppiness about to come, the decrepit Vaught-Hemingway sound system miscues, the smoke machine coming from the new southwest tunnel starts too early, and the team runs onto the field before fans can start Hotty Toddy.

It looks a lot like last year’s entrance, but without any discipline or timing. It looks a lot like other SEC schools, but without the volume and intensity. It looks a lot like what’s supposed to happen, but without delivering the final product.

Funny. All that could be said about the team it’s designed to bolster support for.

Just sample the rather plastic mood of the post-game press conference with head coach David Cutcliffe.

“Our second-half effort from today’s game is something to build on.

Like everyone else, I agree. We might end the season 3-8.

Cutcliffe can recruit but he cannot coach.
