Obviously, the SoCon has taken a major hit. Now, down to 9 members, with 7 playing scholarship football minus their top two programs. They have been hurt. FCS football has been hurt.

ETSU must have a long range plan to get to FBS football, unless that door is shut by NCAA regulations on additional move ups.

Just something I noticed a few years ago when I was on the campus of "Louisiana" to teach for a couple of days.

They showed me the new signs. "University of Louisiana" had replaced "Louisiana-Lafayette."

I was told the university unilaterally decided to do this without any approval from the state. Louisiana-Monroe wasn't thrilled ... I guess they should have put their own signs up.

Just a thought at how one university decided to raise its profile by changing it's name ... even if they did have to take heat for it. I'm not suggesting ETSU change it's name. Just that it's time to show some backbone and take this university to the next level. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far from the new administration. But I have to wonder why Bartow is still around.

Wonder if the administration would ever consider dropping "state" from our name. Much like middle tennessee has done. I'm not sure how i feel about it, or how the rest of the fan base would feel.

I've thought about this as well. Personally I would like to drop the State but that's just me.

And it still infuriates me when people continue to call us Eastern Tennessee. My father-in-law, who is from originally New York, always says Eastern when we are talking about ETSU and I always have to correct him. Nobody ever calls East Carolina, Eastern Carolina. It's not that hard and I don't know why the mistake is always made.

Note: Art DeRosier explored a change to East Tennessee University or University of East Tennessee but, unfortunately, was not around long enough to get the things done he envisioned. I believe that UT objected to the name change idea, for some reason. And, I remember seeing a drawing of a an outdoor football stadium in ETSU Today (believe it was called The ETSU Quarterly back then) from that era. It would have been an expansion/renovation of old Memorial Stadium -- something on the scale of 25,000 seats. It looked good. But, we obviously got the Dome instead.

I would be in favor of dropping State from the name. I have hated the emphasis on "ETSU" we have seem to have had lately. I always enjoyed the old ET logo we had and East Tennessee on our basketball jerseys. To me, ETSU seems more small time than East Tennessee.

Since we are on this subject.. there was discussion in the 60's about dropping the State, and becoming Eastern Tennessee University.. following the lead of Eastern Kentucky University....

Recently, some sports writer used Eastern Carolina University when they announced their move to the Big East.

Wonder if the blueprints still exist from the proposed expansion of Memorial stadium. I can only remember that it would be double decked on both sides with circular walkways on both ends.

I support bringing back the East Tennessee jerseys and use of former logos.

I agree with this name. But also do not know it the majority of supporters would want it or not.

The reference may have been to Memohis State University renamed as University of Memphis.

Our endowment would last a a couple months at most. If Noland runs academics anywhere near the same way that Stanton ran athletics then yes.. Private university is in our future.

RE: App St/Ga Southern to Sun Belt
East Tennessee State University has been trying to push ETSU as a primary reference for quite some time now. It's not to the extent where the University of California at Los Angeles is always called UCLA, but game notes have asked writers and broadcasters to refer to the Bucs as "ETSU" in secondary references much like Southern California's game notes ask that the Trojans never be called Southern Cal.

By the way, I think that's where the "Eastern" Tennessee comes from. Nobody says South California or West Pennsylvania, and these areas are a lot more recognizable to the average American than East Tennessee. Hence, because of this style, Eastern Tennessee.

Ever try to explain, when you're talking about a neighboring community, if you are talking about south West Virginia or southwest Virginia?

You get to the point where you are almost ready to say I Don't Know is on third base.

RE: App St/Ga Southern to Sun Belt
Anyway, I digress. But if a name change was implemented, then wouldn't that be a real final slap in the face to that whole Mullins-Stanton era at ETSU, where the university was going to be identified, come hell or high water, with four letters?

Personally, I don't want the "State" to be dropped from the name. I always loved it when Chip Kessler called the Bucs' "State" on the broadcasts and the uniforms of the mid-80s said, simply, "STATE!"

I've said this before, but to me, just saying "State" announced to the world that of all the state universities out there, it was East Tennessee State that really mattered.

Screw Ohio! What's wrong with sylvania, Penn? I don't care about Florida and Middle Tennesee or (at one time) Memphis just can't compare!

We are STATE- and everybody knows it!

I used to love watching Jim Valvano's Wolfpack with uniforms that simply said "State." Pete Franklin once said that in a conference with highbrow schools like Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia; North Carolina State was destined to be the "Billy Carter of the ACC."

Ouch.

But when they just put "State" on that red uniform, and they won the National Championship, it seemed like N.C. State was the only State that mattered.

And frankly, in the year of the Cardiac Pack, they were.

I'd like to see the Bucs have that kind of status one day.

So keep State. And celebrate it!
