RE: Add VCU yesterday.... I want them in our conference

It is very reasonable to add 3 very qualified Oly Sport teams. Why? Because 3 teams will never have the pull that 7 catholic private schools + Notre Dame will have. It will be 11 All sports schools + 1 Football only versus 3 Oly Sport schools. That's exactly 3/4 of the conference. No pull in major decisions, but they still bring quite a bit to the table AND provide a feeder program (think minor teams feeding into major league baseball) if we want to add another market for football.
Who should those teams be? VCU, UMass, and any of Dayton / St. Louis / Wichita State... etc.
3 Olympic Sports teams compared to the debacle that was HALF THE ENTIRE CONFERENCE BEING OLYMPIC SPORT ONLY is not what should be compared. What SHOULD be compared is the 2+ decades of success the Big East had from supporting their basketball side. Adding 3 guaranteed NCAA tourny Bids will go a long way to doing that, and will make the football offseason VERY fun.
Bring on UMass, VCU, Wichita State.
My thoughts exactly. Use the hybrid to make the conference better, stronger, more attractive, and more valuable. I like the idea of adding three, but at the very least adding VCU should be a no brainer.

VCU was good before Shaka Smart. Jeff Capel started this most recent one and then it was the coach who is now at Alabama. Smart didn't start this. I'm not so sure I would want to go there tho. I am against the hybrid model. I would rather add ODU or even Charlotte.

I understand what you are saying but here is reality we will never match the five conferences ahead of us, they will poach any school from our league that steps up. So our plan should be hw can we maximize revenues with schools we can get. If adding a couple of Olympic schools like we did Navy for football only will get us this then we need to do it.
If I was in charge VCU as a partner for Navy would be a no brainer, improves our basketball and access to basketball units which right now VCU brings in 2 million a year from its past six years performance.

Excellent points. It's mind-boggling that people dont' seem to fully understand this. I look at VCU also as a great reason to NOT EVER invite more startup FBS schools like Charlotte or ODU. I'd personally rather have a limited hybrid than play in a football conference w/ those 2.

It's a fair point. In the short term it's likely the correct mindset, if this conference holds together it's probably not.

But I will tell you that as that 12 all sport member I'm leaning more towards ODU than Tulsa. They have a lot more upside and are already matching Tulsa in football attendance and are better than them in basketball.
ODU would be an excellent match for VCU and creates close rivalries with Navy,Temple and ECU.
Because of their size and the kind of support that Tulsa its getting even when their football is at the top I'm not impressed and have major concerns at wether they can get any better.

I agree, Tulsa is competitive but fan support is not good at all. ODU has a higher upside imo.

ODU could be a monster if they expanded their stadium.

Why are we in such a big hurry to add a 12th school, they have not officially stated leagues need 12 for a conference championship, have they ? If or when they do, who knows what will happen. I would wait until it becomes official, teams to be added are going nowhere, no need to start splitting money with teams we may or may not need. I am a UC fan in the minority, I do not think it's a given that UC is guaranteed a spot in the next phase of realignment, realignment could go all kinds of different ways. I say stay as is until we have to add a 12th.

That's just the thing though. We DO have to add a 12th. The sooner we get to 12, the sooner we cash in on that CCG check. Hopefully it's sooner than 2015.
