The odds on favorite, Tulsa, could be announced now for either 2014 or 2015 now that the deal with Navy as the 11th is pretty certain. TV deal answers for Navy were ironed out by allowing them to keep their current deal thru 2017. There is really no reason to drag out the announcement of Tulsa (or UMass) as number 12 unless there really is some uncertainty as to which one is wanted by the majority of members since the Navy issue has been resolved and the C7 departure has been finalized and the Big East name is known to be going with them.

Even if it was announced this afternoon, I still doubt the newly announced school would arrive prior to 2015. Theres really no point. A CCG in 2014 can only occur if the nCAA has a rule change allowing a CCG by 10 team conferences or if Nave decides to join early (which they have said repeated that they cant get there until 2015, I suspect, because they would have to buy out too many games in 2014 to make the move possible). The only other option I can see is if part of the 100 million in exit fees was used to buy Navy out of enough 2014 games to join early. Ive never even heard that mentioned as an option.

Could it be waiting till the ACC stuff with other schools withdrawing from the ACC(VA,Ga Tech).?

No ACC teams are withdrawing, but Navy is still iffy on the Aresco league.

By all measures, UMass should be invited over Tulsa. If, indeed, TU is invited over UMass, that means that the southern (which most Nbe schools are) do not want a geographical outlier boosting travel costs and student time out of classroom....when UConn and Cincy depart.

For Tulsa, if invited, they can follow Navy's strategy since both Navy and Tulsa will have two years to evaluate this Clustesmuck. If either Navy and TU don't like what they see, then stay put and the 2015 entry date allows that. TU won't give notice to CUSA until the last moment...which, fortunately, is two years from now. And, of course, it is a no brainer that TU, if invited, will load any acceptance with a boatload of caveats to protect itself from paying any entrance fees, to protect itself from midweek night games, if an existing school departs, and so on and so on. Load up this acceptance agreement with as many caveats for self portection as NBC/ESPN did with Clustersmuck tv contract, Class A caveats, Class B caveats, Class C caveats, Class D caveats, etc.

I have been calling Nbe a lateral transfer for any existing CUSA school. With further reflection, I think that is wrong. Call it instead a conference name change, which is more accurate with 9 former CUSA teams and 1 MAC team plus 1 independent. Conference 9-1-1?

Conference 9-1-1 reminds me of the old Mizzouri Valley Conference. All Tulsa needs to do is schedule Louisville nonconference to go with former Mizzouri Valley members Cincy, Memphis, and Houston.

No UMass.

If the Aresco league plans to invite Tulsa for 2015 it would still be best to invite them prior to July 1st of this year to save Tulsa some money. The fee to leave with 1 yr notice is $500k and with 2 yrs notice its $400k. Not much money but its still money Tulsa could spend on something else.

I can understand that and I too hope it happens fast, not because I want CUSA to lose Tulsa - I don't - but because I realize its going to happen and I'd like CUSA to get on with the replacement, which I assume will be WKU but there are other possibilities as well. The sooner the better for everyone.

If its 2015...it could be UMass, gives them more time to get acclimated to D-1 in football. In all honesty, what would be the reason to announce now? The Aresco League has a TV deal that includes a number of "schools" and it can't have a champ game until 2015 in FB. I guess if you are going to add for 2014 you have to add by early June for the purpose of exit fee's, etc...but if it is going to be 2015, you could wait until this time next year.

IMO, the fact that they haven't "officially" announced ECU as an all sports member tells me that they are planning on adding them and another school for the 2014 season, which really just leaves Tulsa as the only option (unless Southern Miss can squeeze in there). UMass & Southern Miss are probably on the doorstep if someone leaves or when something can be renegotiated or when they do something good enough that they "have" to be included. Adding Tulsa hurts CUSA big time, IMO, which may be the biggest reason to do it for 2014 (and the nBCS contract).

Well it will be another blow to CUSA for sure but its hardly going to be a big splash nationally when you add Tulsa so timing seems unimportant to me other than getting your lineup completed so that CUSA and then the Sun Belt can get their lineups completed until the next round of expansion hits.

USM will announce that it has accepted an invitation to Conference.com during its post-NIT victory celebration.

If they are not coming until 2015, then I wouldnt announce it until during the football season. You'd get alot more press when people were paying attention. Once the NCAA tournament is over, few are even paying attention to college sports at that point. Its like shouting in the wilderness.
