You really think she would not move for a half million dollar pay raise?? Man I hope you are right. Money isn't everything that's for sure but $500 k is a lot. How much is enough?? One dollar more???

WBB coaches don't make that kind of money...
p
As a blanket statement that' s clearly not true. Several have base salaries in high six figures. Tricia is unlikely to walk into those numbers anywhere but could build up to them at the right school.

The comment was about throwing a half million dollar pay raise at her. There are something like 15 extremely estabvlished coaches on that list even earning $500k in total compensation packages.
It appears unlikely most programs would be bringing that kind of pay raise.

So if we give her a raise and extension after each WNIT appearance, I'd imagine we'd build her a statue outside Savage after a trip to the NCAA tournament...

Yeah, and I actually agree completely with another poster on this board (not sure if he posted it here or just told me it over the phone). He said that the extension and raise that we all knew was coming shouldn't have as much guaranteed money, but a huge bonus for making the NCAA Tournament and more bonuses for each round that is reached.

There's no doubt we've had teams worthy of NCAA bids under Cullop, but they just haven't been able to seal the deal yet. Hopefully the time is soon. With the returning core, this team will be one of the elite teams in the MAC and I wouldn't be surprised if they were preseason favorites.

I would be stunned if UT was the preseason favorite. Two returning stars and a troop of unknowns whose talent has yet to be demonstrated. CMU! maybe Akron, BSU and even BG may be ranked ahead. CMU will almost certainly be.

I guess I'm in the minority, but for me making the NCAA tournament is not the single most important thing the team can achieve in any given year. Yes, I was bitterly disappointed with the loss to CMU in the conference tournament, but I'd still rather win the MAC title and lose the tournament than the other way around. Let's face it, the Rockets are never going to win the national championship or come anywhere close, so why is it such an earth-shattering accomplishment to get into the tournament? The MAC, like most conferences, has chosen to give its automatic bid to a tournament winner rather than to the regular season champion, which in my opinion is more deserving of the bid. If we finish fourth in the conference next year and then sneak into the NCAA via the MAC tournament, that will be exciting, but it would not merit more of a bonus for Cullop than a conference championship would. (Of course, I'd rather see us win the conference AND the tournament, if I'm allowed to be greedy.)

CMU is losing some key players as well, though they are returning Green and Bradford, their top two players by far. You're right, they'll probably be the favorites. But I'll take Andola and Inma over any two players on the other teams you mentioned.

I'm not very impressed with the returning players for BG and I have no idea what their recruiting class looks like. It'll be interesting to see if Akron and Ball State can maintain some consistency next season.

Next season's Lady Rockets squad is gonna have to rely upon some young & fairly inexperienced players...doubt that we would be "pre-season favorites", but I think it will be a good thing for the spotlight NOT to be on the UT, takes some of the pressure off and let's the team develop through the season without having to meet some lofty expectations as we've had the past few seasons.

Good points. Plus, the schedule will be tougher (a year too late), so the younger players will get some valuable experience early against good competition.

They will do fine next year but won't do as well as this year. I hope for 20 wins but may be shy of that. I think we will end up 2nd in the west however.

If that is most people's belief...particularly in all sports, then let's drop to Division 2 where we can compete for one. Better yet, let's hang that quote in every Toledo locker room to remind our student athletes that it's a waste of their time competing because they will never be national champions. I can't stand the "we're never good enough" attitude. The whole point of competition, particularly at this level, is to be the best.

Reality check here-What is the highest any MAC womens team has ever gotten in the NCAA tournament???? Sweet sixteen?? Well it is possible but not very probable but dont forget possible. I don't see it in any MAC team currently but maybe in the future as more parity comes into place. Some teams other then the top ten need to get there and maybe some parity will come with it. Until then we can hope and with a good coach we will get closer every year.

No way CMU is not the preseason favorite and rightfully so. IMO Bradford should have been POY this year and barring injury I will be surprised if she is not next year.

CMU, BSU and UT all bring back 2 All MAC players; however, in UT's case that is ALL the game experienced players they bring back except for Recker who has proved herself on Defense but, IMO, not yet on Offense------the rest have very, very little game experience so UT will probably be picked 3rd in the west behind Ball State and CMU although perhaps they may sneak into 2nd based primarily on past performance. HOWEVER, if Nunn and the incoming freshman are anywhere nearly as good as many posters seem to think they are then, UT should be able to get a 4 or 5 seed in the tournament next year and with the benefit of a season's on the job training type experience, they may be able to make some noise in the tournament.

I believe that BG made the sweet 16 about 4 or 5 years ago and I remember UT made it back in the Fennelly era when the field was still 32.

Actually there are about a half dozen or so WBB teams that are far, far superior to the rest of the field, so I could see a good MAC team getting to the sweet 16 with some regularity if they got a favorable seed and didn't have to face a top 10 team until the third round. I remember a few years ago Ball State actually took out Tennessee in the first round.

I agree. The Basketball Tournaments are not exactly level playing fields but at least, unlike football, the door is still open and there is a chance, however small, to win a championship. There have only been about 15 different schools to ever win a WBB NCAA Championship but there are still over 300 teams willing to compete.

We will not win a national championship. I don't think it follows that we should therefore be Division II. It just means that different schools have different goals. The teams with a chance to win the national championship don't have to worry about winning their conference tournaments since they are locks for at-large bids. I'm just suggesting that, for a team like Toledo, winning a regular-season conference championship is a big deal. I know that it's one of the goals that the team sets before each season. To me, it's a bigger deal than winning the MAC tournament. I know that there are some fans who feel that the only important games take place at Quicken Loans Arena at the end of the year. I just don't feel that way.

Most athletes know that they will never be the best at what they do. That doesn't mean they shouldn't compete. That's why there are different levels of accomplishment. If my daughter is a gymnast who competes successfully at the local level, should I encourage her to quit competing because she lacks the talent or the body type or the single-minded dedication it would take to be an Olympic gold medalist?

...or Indiana State with some guy named Bird...or schools like George Mason, VCU or this time Wichita State making deep runs (and the Shockers almost squeezed into the championship game themselves).

There is more parity in college basketball than in football--no question.

I'd like to officially hire you as Butler basketball's pre-game speaker. I'm sure your philosophy fits right in with their goals...01-wingedeagle

RE: Cullop's Salary
Now I understand why some people were so disappointed by our 29-4 season. You thought we might win the national championship. Oh, well, maybe next year.
