As I understand it, 247 was started by the original Rivals.com founders. It has probably the most flexible and modern platform of the lot (better photo and video integration, twitter integration). And they've developed some nice new features like a "composite" ranking system that compiles the rankings from the big 4 (Rivals, Scout, ESPN and 247) for every player and then generates a composite ranking that can flow through to program's class rankings and so on. Also a commitment prediction system where their publishers can predict commitments as prospects progress through their recruitment.

But currently it's not hugely useful for Rice fans as without a Rice dedicated publisher there isn't much (or accurate) information.

I haven't bothered with Scout since Moondog moved to Rivals and ESPN gives even less time than Rivals to recruiting beyond "major" programs and Top ~500 national prospects.

I checked out 247 and their page on our newest recruit (Klingler) and I was pretty impressed. First, they had predicted Rice since 6/1. He is a composite 3-star recruit, not sure if we have any other recruits who average 3 stars across the different recruiting services (although I see that Rivals has him as a 2-star). Offers from Tulsa, SMU, Memphis.

Klingler likely displaces early offer Tryston Mizerak as the Center in the class. If not over the ball he's definitely an inside guy.

He joins a trio of 6-6 OL - Calvin Anderson, Hunter Ponder, and Sam Pierce - in what is a very impressive 2013 OL group...

Any relation?

Jimmy Klingler's (David's brother, and also a UH QB) son.

Interesting story on Klingler. Has his cousin committed anywhere yet?

Owls have picked up a commit from Cy-Fair HS DE Brady Wright tonight.

Wright is currently 6-2 1/2 215, but will get much bigger at Rice. He's got great speed to rush the passer - he clocked 4.56 in the 40 yard dash at Rice Camp this week...

Thanks owlatheart.

Also Strake Jesuit LB Emmanuel Ellerbee visted the Rice campus last week on an unofficial visit (though Head Coach David Bailiff and LB Coach Darrell Patterson were both out of the office when he did. Important because he may have committed were they present for his visit). He's been offered by the Owls. Though he's listed at 6-2 220 4.8 he "plays" much faster than that and his film shows it. I wouldn't be surprised if recent testing was much faster. If you're looking for a comparison both on and off the field think impressive Rice student/athlete Gabe Baker...

Moondog, good to have you on the Parliament but please let us know when you find a paid site so we can support you. You have been a tremendous source of insight into the football program that I hate to think that you are investing so much time without any compensation.

With that said, have you heard anything regarding The departure of Coach K, his subsequent replacement, and how things are progressing for off season conditioning?

Thanks Pan95. I will let you know but from the beginning my passion for Rice Athletics has far outweighed any financial motives.

To your question, for now Assistant Tipper Graham will serve as interim Head S&C Coach. He's already received a strong endorsement from current players and I don't expect the all important S&C program to miss a beat.

FYI 2013 signees will be reporting this Sunday...

RE: 2014 Football Recruiting
Rice is on a roll.

Tonight San Antonio Reagan Athlete Ty Summers was offered and committed to the Owls. Their 3rd commit in the last week (Cory Klingler, Brady Wright)

He's played at least 4 different positions in high school including QB, WR, LB, and Safety. Summers has great workout numbers - ran a 4.54 at camp and measured 6-2 206 pounds. Shuttle is 4.07 and vertical 36".

Think Turner Petersen...

Good pickup in Summers. He runs hard on film.

But, so much for that 2013 DJ Green split-up with Baylor keeping Andrew Morris away from them. Tough to lose a 6-2 295 athletic DT commit.

No doubt talon. I'd consider that "salt in the wound" given the situation. And Morris had just visited Rice Camp (but didn't work out). Given that visit I'm wondering how much facilities (and still quite the pink elephant in the corner) played a part in his switch.

Another player who visited camp Sunday also pledged elsewhere - OT Justin Murphy of Belton pledged to Texas Tech on Monday. Even more disappointing, a source told me Murphy's parents attended Rice...

Justin's parents did graduate from Rice. Justin had a very impressive list of offers to choose from. The Rice connection was strong, but it sounds like the Big 12 offers were more enticing. I believe he had multiple Big 12 offers to choose from. Can't blame him for that. At least he didn't choose a CUSA or AAC school over Rice.

RE: 2014 Football Recruiting
This October will mark 2 years since the EZF facility announcement and this December will mark 2 years since Board approval.

Sure has been quiet since then.

It took Tulane roughly a year from fundraising inception to project start on an entirely new on-campus football stadium. And that's without having a winning season since 2002 and prior to the Big East/AAC move.

Something doesn't add up.

Why doesn't the Rice Stadium improvement effort have a public face to raise awareness and generate a wider net for possible contributors? Tulane had this ready immediately when their campaign began - http://www.tulanestadium.com/tulane-stadium/

Can't imagine going up against the Centennial Campaign helped. But, I agree. It has taken a very long time.

edit: This probably isn't the place to be talking about this. Don't want the recruiting thread to get too far off track.

Over the last 2 years a lot has happened in the conference shuffle. It's possible Rice is stalling on the EZ facility to see if maybe the money can be used in a different effort related to conference realignment possibilities. The Big 12, to use one example, probably cares more about facilities for fans and TV presentation than an EZ facility. I don't know exactly how the EZ facility concept began, but I wonder how much of the project was created with conference realignment opportunities in mind.

Or maybe somebody decided to hold off on the EZ facility since we're a step away from FCS. But hopefully my first theory.

The EZF announcement was also rushed to make us look relevant after UH and the Big East announcement.

I agree on the Centennial Campaign. But if the school can raise $1B for the CC, raising $60M for football would seem like 3rd and inches.....but only with the right "QB"....

And back on topic I meant no slight to Murphy for his decision, but it IS disappointing to see legacy kids go somewhere else.
