+1. MB, they probably blew away their bid. I hope not but for some reason 8th and 9th place teams in other conferences deserve a shot over a 2nd place team from another conference. Memphis also has a nice RPI at 15 and are projected as a 7 seed... Southern Miss is 29
Cincinnati came in 9th place in the Big East. According to KenPom data, Cincy had 5 wins over top 50 teams and 4 wins over top 51-100 teams. That's far superior to the resumes of Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee.
You could say Cincy had more opportunities to play top teams. That's precisely why the conference you are in still has importance, at least respect to basketball and getting into the Big Dance.
I don't get why this is so hard for some people to understand. All we really have on Southern Miss and MTSU is the eye test. I think MTSU deserves a bid ahead of Southern Miss, but neither have a resume that offers much.
Why is the definition of a quality opponent based on a team's RPI rating? It makes the eye test a very subjective way to judge a team if you toss out Southern Miss' RPI, then rate the quality of their opponents using the same RPI measure.
I am not sold on Missouri either. Why were they a lock over Kentucky and Alabama? Missouri won a bunch of home games and lost almost every game on the road in the SEC (except at Miss St and at S.Carolina). They finished in a tie for fifth in the SEC. Missouri does not pass the eye test in my opinion, but glad they got a bid over the Turds.

The USM coach is strange looking.
He looks like an eagle to me. My wife agrees too.

Because the RPI, or Kenpom, or any other system like that is all we have to go off of.(and the entire process is somewhat subjective, the only way to change that would be to fill out the bracket based on RPI, which could cause many problems) Southern Miss basically had no good wins OOC. Missouri, who you mention, had wins over Standford and VCU on a neutral court and Illinois and Bucknell at home. 3 of those 4 teams are tournament teams. They also had wins over 2 other tournament teams in Mississippi and Florida. They only had one bad loss, and it was to RPI 102 Texas A&M. Southern Miss, on the other hand had zero wins over tournament teams. 2 bad losses, including one to 200+ Marshall, and 4 of their 5 top 100 wins against RPI 91 and 100. There just wasn't enough there, even with a great RPI.
