You would hope he could have given UAB a heads up before they paid double what the Hardy Corp property was worth.

This is not a surprise. We had been hearing indications of this as early as February 7th. I'm sure UAB had been hearing the same things.

That B'ham really does need the MPF in order to compete for larger conventions and make for a more complete Civic center, is not anything UAB would not know. The school is watching the process just like the rest of us as the city strives to build something it really needs while the state and suburbs to date have shown no support. Just like the GA Dome did not depend upon the SEC games to thrive, the same thing would go for the MPF. The event calendar for the GA Dome was over 200 events per year and B'ham would benefit from a piece or two of that action.

I agree but there are plenty of folks who will fight this thing tooth and nail. The MPF would be a benefit to the entire Birmingham Metro area and the state but you have plenty of folks who don’t see it that way. They're not for anything that isn’t in their own community or little town. The train of thought is one of many reasons why Birmingham and the state of Alabama have fallen behind other states with major metropolitan areas.

Maybe I need to increase my "Belief", but I don't think there will be a new multi-purpose facility built in Birmingham during the next 20 years.

The funding for those groups working against an MPF in Birmingham would come from Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Charlotte, etc.

Now that they are talking 40 - 50K how about putting this MPF right next to Bartow and the Barons ballpark?

Retractable roof and capability to hold a football field are my only requirements.

It wouldnt be smart to build anything that would hold less than 65k in my opinion.

In the past, the more seats you put in the stadium, the more money you could potentially make. There is a new thinking that less seats and more skyboxes will generate equal-to or more revenue... and the event organizers have less headaches dealing with smaller attendance while raking in the same amount of cash and paying less employees.

I think it is definitely a model that could work for Birmingham with the right events.

RE: Birmingham Mayor Bell revives dome talk while attending SEC Tournament
The project Bell is talking about will be at the BJCC--they have all the money and the land. I wouldn't say it won't happen, because the city raised taxes for the project (and I think possibly the county too?) and all that money has been piling up. Since they raised the original funding source and the project got put on hold, I think they had raised like $300 million. If the city wants to build a new stadium, that's fine. The Magic City Classic and SWAC Championship needs a venue for the day that Legion Field collapses.

None of this is Blazer Related, though. UAB should still build its own stadium regardless of what the city does (unless the city builds a 30-35k seat open air stadium south of 1st Ave)

I can see that but 40-50k puts you below what you need now. The biggest sporting even in the city (Magic City Classic) averages over 66k, and the Compass Bowl drew 52k or more this past season, not to mention 41k for the SWAC title game. Why build something that less than the demands that you currently have?

With the new MPF, Bartow Arena, The BJCC, and an OCS, Birmingham will be ready to host the Olympics.

With the BOT and they way they treat UAB, if the MPF is built then you can kiss the OCS good-bye.03-banghead

If UAB can come up with a funding plan that doesn't take money away from academics, and has attendance at Legion Field to back it up instead of (fair and accurate yet ignored) projections, then it won't matter what the Board says.
