RE: MAC looking to raid the Sun Belt?
Arkansas State has had a couple of good years, but are they really a great program? Their endowment is only $31 million, which doesn't indicate a lot of support for the school.

If they're looking to expand South, WKU is a much better choice. It fits geographically, too.

WKU would be a great fit for the MAC but they've already been approached and preferred to stay in the Sun Belt rather than move there. The only way I see them moving to the MAC would be if the SBC got WAC'd and WKU didn't get a C-USA invite. But that's rather far fetched as for the SBC to get WAC'd, WKU would be one of the first to be selected to leave.

So though a good fit, the chances WKU ever moves to the MAC are remote at best.

Sure they've been a nursery to a few programs here and there; UMass, Temple and UCF come to mind. However, I can't recall them making a strategic conference move in over 40 years.

If UMass were to leave, they're still a 12 member conference and unless someone decides to leave from the core 12, I don't think they see any reason to add members.

Northern Illinois, Buffalo and Marshall were all much more recent than 40 years.

I thought WKU was in discussions in the mid 2000s before they upgraded and wasn't admitted or didnt join. Now that it makes more sense for both parties, I still see WKU to the MAC as unlikely. CUSA seems to be WKU's eventual and most desired destination and it seems reasonable they'll be asked next. Why pay for exit fees and entry fees twice?

After WKU leaves, the next round of realignment means ASU or ULL is likely on the clock for next. I dont see the MAC as a likely home for any Sun Belt programs, because for any of them to be attractive to the stable MAC, they'd also be attractive to an unstable (meaning needing more members constantly) CUSA. CUSA, because of geography, is more desirable than the MAC to virtually all Sun Belt schools and also seems to be needing new members more frequently than the MAC.

I think WKU gets out this year to CUSA and it stabilizes for a few years.

Don't really see those as 'strategic' additions. N. Ill and Marshall were rejoining a conference they had been in previously and all three basically moved up to play D-IA football as far as I can recall.

I don't see the MAC 'raiding' a conference for greater regional reach, t.v. money or any thing like that.

Add Akron (1992), Central Florida (2002) and Temple (2007) to that list.

Back in 2005 the MAC was looking to expand with WKU it was also interested in MTSU and possibly Troy. The idea of a southern raid by the MAC is hardly a new idea.

Already mentioned UCF and Temple (not sure about Akron).

Still nothing shows me that the MAC is willing to pull the trigger against the SBC. ASU and UL-L may be looking to move (UL-L to get away from UL-M) if WKU leaves; and should that happen, the SBC could be WAC'd depending on the mood of the NCAA and whether they would provide a waiver for UL-M, Troy, USA, Tx State and all the transitional programs.

ASU and UL-L would be leading this demise, not the MAC.

The MAC might add them for FB-only, but no way are they going to Ark. St. or ULL for all-sports. They like their compact geography too much. Plus, the SBC and MAC each have very similar TV contract payouts. Why would an SBC member jump to the MAC? There's no money in that.

If you factor in the potential for a tiered revenue distribution system under the new playoff format for the G5 schools, then actually there may be money to be made by leaving the Sun Belt. If the Sun Belt consistent sits in the bottom of the conference rankings with a bunch of FCS startups in the league then the Sun Belt will be getting the smallest share of the revenue.

The Sun Belt also doesn't have as much TV exposure on ESPN as the MAC including local broadcasts on Saturday afternoons for the MAC Game of the Week.

For an ambitious football school like Arkansas State it makes sense over a depleted SBC or an FCS laden CUSA even. Especially if a CUSA invite is not in hand now.

If they were so ambitious, why the demand (according to you) to include a second SBC school? The MAC only needs one more member. Why make the demand if they need a partner?

Probably thinking that the A-12 will take UMass and they'll need 2 to get to 14?

RE: MAC looking to raid the Sun Belt?
First and foremost I don't think there is anything here.

Second if there is something here, it is the Sun Belt schools approaching the MAC not the other way around.

Third. While travel in the MAC for Arkansas State is really no worse than travel in the Sun Belt, for MAC teams it is terrible. And travel is just bad for Louisiana unless this a whopper deal involving four or more Sun Belt (ie. ASU, UL, and at least two of Troy, USA, WKU).

Fourth. Sun Belt and MAC TV money may be similar but the number of games telecast is not. MAC gets far more games on national TV.

Fifth. Scratch any ideas of football only. There is no option out there that would be acceptable as an Olympic home unless it were the Valley and the Valley outside of Missouri State probably has no one voting for Arkansas State.
