Land Grant University Status
Elite Basketball Program

Elite basketball program?

They stopped being elite in hoops when Calipari went to the Nets in 1996.

upon further investigation.... Just Kidding

But still! Those other two things have merit. Plus it'll appease Temple? Maybe UConn will pity us and stay put? Idk.

It'll all probably fall apart in a year anyway, so wtfc...

Yeah Tulsa's basketball tradition is every bit as good as UMASS. Only advantage in history UMASS has is the vacated Calipari final 4.

Navy is still coming. They want to play the majority of the teams in this league, their AD said so even after Boise and SDSU left. Where else are they going to go? They need to play in a conference because of the new bowl system. Navy fits the football foot print of this conference more than any other conference.

UMASS Basketball was relevant for about 1/2 of Coach Cals tenure and for a couple years after...everything before and after has been irrelevant. The have not made the NCAA Tournament in close to 15 year or something like that.

Tulsa not only has better football by a huge margin they also have more Tournament appearances and BB tradition than UMASS.

In fact Tulsa has been to the big dance four times since UMASS last appearance.

Yes, because there isn't a team left in CUSA that Tulsa should worry about. Yep, there are no teams left in CUSA that have a 16-3 record in that stadium pictured in mwp's sig. No teams left in CUSA that have all-time winning records against every ConferenceTBA team they've ever played...

North Division:

South Divison:

Memphis and ECU should be swapped to preserve pre-existing rivalries.

thats not a valid reason. they should be swapped for the entertainment value wed all get watching their fans explode and as payback for holding both CUSA and NBE hostage by turning in their notice.

You guys went 0-12 last year in CUSA! That's one hell of a hill to get over. I'm not sure you do in the long run.

Lol...we left CUSA west to play in CUSA west and join a conference with UMass. I've seen enough. I'm fine with UMass as a Olympic sports add to balance Navy. They aren't ready for FBS football--much less a move up in weight class.

at least you arent playing Southland teams in the CUSA West. There's that.

I have argued for UMass over Tulsa for an entire year now. I would rather see Southern Miss added than Tulsa but I could live with either one if Navy left. I don't think you can put a premium on state flagships programs or large public universities.

If you get VCU on board too you have yourself a nice basketball conference. A league with Cincinnati, UConn, Memphis, Temple is a nice league but UMass and VCU would give you another strong rivalry plus higher profile games along the east coast. UCF, USF, Houston, SMU, Tulane, and ECU give the conference undervalued basketball that can compete with middle of the SEC.

Hell no to UMass! We need an established FBS team not one that just moved up that we hope they get good. It will weaken our football even more. Plus when UConn leaves why would we need anyone from New England.

Now you know how we felt when Marinatto gave us Villanova for football.

Our first losing season in 19 years. ECU has more than that in the last three years. We won't threaten for a conference title next year, but we will be just fine in the long run.

Woudnt it make more sense to add UMass, VCU, and Wichata for olympic sports only? Add Tulsa (only if Navy is coming) for all sports. If UMass football becomes a juggarnaught, they can always be added later--perhaps with S Miss. In the meantime, you have created a solid 10 team football conference and a great basketball group to match. When Navy comes, Tulsa joins to make 12 for football. You'd have 13 for basketball and when Tulsa comes--youd jumpt to 14.

RE: UMass emerging as probable #12
I believe UMass is currently expanding their on campus FB stadium from 18,000 to 25,000. As far as I know, there are no plans to go beyond 25,000. We need a UMass fan to verify/clarify this.

If Navy backs out, we may want to stay at 10 schools. If we go to 12, UMass & Tulsa are good choices (IMHO).

For those that don't know, the big differences between UConn & UMass are:

1) The people of Massachusetts don't support UMass to the same degree like the people of Connecticut support UConn (mainly because Massachusetts has four pro teams, Connecticut has none).
2) Massachusetts has 6.5 million people, Connecticut has 3.6 million people.
