MSU Completes Men's Basketball Schedule

Oct 11, 2004

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State Director of Athletics Larry Templeton announced Monday the official release of the 2004-05 men's basketball schedule.

"I know there has been much discussion regarding the release of our men's basketball schedule," Templeton said, "but with the addition of two tournaments and the alteration of our non-conference schedule to accommodate them, it was important that game contracts be finalized before that release."

Head coach Rick Stansbury's Bulldogs open their season with a Saturday, Nov. 6, exhibition contest against Universidad Panamericana, tip off their home regular-season vs. Nicholls State on Sunday, Nov. 21, and begin defense of their Southeastern Conference championship against Auburn, Wednesday, Jan. 5.

The Bulldogs start their regular season in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, Nov. 11-12, with opening round action at the Birmingham (Ala.) Jefferson Convention Center. Four regional site winners will meet the following weekend at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It is MSU's earliest season debut in school history. Stansbury's team will later play national power Arizona in the John R. Wooden Classic at Anaheim, Calif.

State will make a school-record number of television appearances on the '04-05 schedule. In addition to the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic semifinals and finals, which will be aired on ESPN2, and the Wooden Classic, which will be shown on WGN, non-conference games vs. South Alabama (Fox Sports Net, 12/2), at Xavier (ESPN2, 12/18) and against Virginia Tech (Fox Sports Net, 12/30) at the Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans, will all be televised.

Just prior to that Virginia Tech game, MSU will play host to Jacksonville State at Jackson's Mississippi Coliseum. Following the Auburn SEC home opener, 12 of State's next 15 SEC games will be telecast regionally or nationally. In all, the Bulldogs could be televised a total of 18 times during the season.

It's sad when MSU and Bama fans have to talk basketball in Oct just to have something worth talking about.

I like this place RMUN.
