RE: Mike Korcek on the AD search
We were ranked like 15th in the country for the Ohio game! The fact we only had 21,000 for that game shows how bad our fans suck.

Honestly, if you would have given last years team a Saturday night game in October with good weather (as the Ohio game was in 03) I bet you it would have drew near 20,000.

...I don't know we still only had 18k for Kansas and that was with a lot of Kansas fans.
Though the students would show up a bit better...right?

I think too many of you believe that kids are going to NIU for the college experience vs. just trying to get a degree, work a couple yobs, and get back home on weekends.

Students are not the problem with attendance. We probably have the best student attendance in the MAC, next to maybe Ohio.

Our fanbase sucks, can't disagree. But NIU's been treated like 4th class for so long by the media, I think too many don't take it seriously.

Both of you balls of sunshine may be overreacting a bit. Attendance is down everywhere.

But even when it was up we still were only pulling 22k as a ranked team that just defeated Alabama and 2 other AQ schools.
The good thing is that our brand and exposure is much better now than it was pre 2003.
If anything that the 2004 season can show us its that a crappy home schedule after a National headline grabbing historic year attendance should bump up a bit.

Let's face it, we don't have a long tradition of football greatness. We are a mid-major school with a small capacity stadium that has performed really well over recent years.
Then factor in the "suitcase" students who have other priorities. I know other posts have mentioned that student attendance is not the problem.....if that's the case, who do the marketing gurus need to reach out to? Young alums? Old alums? DeKalb/Sycamore locals? Other close in suburbs?

That's IMHO.
Having been to other College football stadiums, whether it be BIG or other mid-majors like ourselves, a high percentage of the season ticket fan base are locals who may or may not have gone to the school but support the team similar to the Kane County Cougars/Chicago Wolves type fans.
They typically live less than an hour or so away.

My point is, why should we market more until we have something more to market to the non-diehard fan. We could market until the cows come home, if we have 2 or 3 Saturday homes games a year and those are against Akron, EIU and Idaho, it doesnt matter, noone is ever going to jump on board.

Aren't applications up because of the Orange Bowl?

Yes they are and that might be the only thing saving us to maintaining last year's attendance. Thankfully that should partially offset the horrific schedule. But just imagine if you had an Iowa State or Wake Forest or Indiana, etc coming into Huskie Stadium this year, the anticipation/excitement/attendance would be unreal.
