I'm not banking on the winner being from the Central group. Jim n Nick's, Full Moon, Golden Rule, Dreamland (original Tuscaloosa location), Moe's Original are in this group, along with Archibald's in Northport, Saw's in Homewood, and Rusty's in Leeds.

I actually ate at Archibald's the other night, it was ok but I wouldn't say it was great, meat was good but I'm not a fan of mustard in BBQ sauce. Rusty's in Leeds is alright, didn't seem to be anything in special.

How in the heck did cottons make the list. My only time I had it, it was awful..... Dry, greasy and the BBq sauce was tomato paste with black pepper.

ummmm Top Hat!

Can't say I agree on any of them being in the bracket as they're all for the most part just run of the mill commercial bbq joints. I wonder where all the smaller mom & pops type places are?

I would say the winner will probably be from the center as those are the most known places having locations in all the areas maybe Big Bob Gibson's or The Shed/BrickPit

RE: Alabama BBQ bracket
One comment was about the Double LL on Lomb Ave. Charlie Findley who owned the MLB As and operated the Barons as the "B'ham As", loved Double LL since he grew up in that area eating that BBQ. In 1968, on a saturday night while I was in Mobile at the Alabama Republican State Convention (we didn't know then it was the last one), the place was hit and destroyed by a tornado that took out the Fair Park Drive-in theater screen and went down Lomb to the GES store at 12th - across Lomb from Rickwood Park. Shortly after that the Lovoy Bros. moved the store to US 31 in Vestavia, but it failed to win a following in that area and went out of business.

My oldest son still speaks reverently and glowingly of the BBQ at that Lomb Ave. location. His current favorite is Fat Man's BBQ here in Cropwell on US 231 at Rabbit Branch Rd..

I grew up on Carlisle's on 6th Ave south in Avondale. I have not been there in years.

wkr, I believe that the winner is going to come down between Jim n Nick's, Golden Rule, or Dreamland. They have cult followings because of their names, not because of their bbq.

Is Ken's BBQ just north of Tarrant City still open ? That is a Mom & Pop Q joint I miss from my days as a commuter student.

I think Ken's is still open, not sure as I've never been there but my brother has & has liked his sausage.

You sure about Carlisle??? It keeps short hrs & days last time I was there. I can stop by on way to work to see for sure.

Many have told me they don't like Carlisle's because the sauce is not "tomatoey" enough or thick & sweet like many others on the above lists. It is different, but still has a following. BTW, When i first ate there in the 50s, A BBQ sandwich was 60 cents which even then was somewhat expensive.

It may be Big Bob's, but Thomas Pit up here almost always has a line of cars literally stretching into the street. Never seen that kind of commitment to Big Bob's.

For locally owned and family operated BBQ places, the Pell City area offers THE SHACK on 34 to Talledega just east of the Stemley Bridge and FAT MAN'S on US 231 at Rabbit Branch Rd access.

If it were based upon taste and atmosphere, Top Hat would win hands down.

However, I bet only about 1 percent of the voters have ever even heard of it, much less been there.

Ken's is still open. Decent Q, and a helluva good breakfast spot. Cash only, no credit cards. It's well out of Tarrant though, past Jeff St. nearly to Pinson.

If it were me, I'd vote Top Hat, or possibly Green Top, up toward Jasper.

Ken's is most definitely still there. I get caught in the breakfast traffic a couple of times a week.
