New NIU Asst
Northern Illinois: Kelton Copeland has been named running backs coach at NIU. Copeland spent the past two years at the University of South Dakota where he coached the receivers.

Played QB, no FBS experience, 2 years of FCS experience as a WR coach and some lower level coaching but never as a RB coach.

Welcome...I hope you exceed your resume!

RE: New NIU Asst
Is it too much to ask for a RB coach that actually played RB. I know this comes across as judgemental but seems like a downgrade from Manning. We couldn't find anyone more qualified than an FCS WR coach. I am critical because we just brought in a couple nice RB prospects and it is going to be a very important position for us over the coming years. The only plus I see here is the Florida connection.

Exactly my point. At least he had NFL experience though.

I have to agree with HuskieTap, Copeland has never played or coached the RB position.

RE: New NIU Asst
Well now we know why Carey was in the Dakotas over last weekend.

Note: As a senior in 2002, he set the school records for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a career and in a season. He led the Hornets in total offense in 2000 and 2001.

So he is offensive minded and does have rushing ability. This may be a pretty good pick up on short notice. The good thing is at least we have him available for spring practice and our running backs won't be standing around.

+1

We went from a guy with NFL experience to a guy without FBS experience.

RE: New NIU Asst
At first glance, not too impressive of a hire. But the more I look at it, you can tell he works hard to go from the FCS to get this gig. He played qb and will have the knowledge that is needed at rb. He has the mental capacity to know everything about an offense and execute it if he was a successful FCS qb. Yes, Manning had coached RBs a few seasons but I think this guy will be alright. Yes, we wanted a splash hire, but I will take hard workers that have a complete knowledge of the offense.

do you think coach carey should have contacted you to advise him on this selection? Don't you think coach carey knows what he is doing.

I wonder if Carey thought about calling Garrett Wolfe? He would make a very good RB coach.

GW doesn't have any coaching experience. That being said, he was a great RB who worked insanely hard to get where he did. I'm sure he could help a lot of the RB's develop their skill sets. I'm also guessing he could recruit the Chicago area, specifically the public league, very well.

Biggest plus as far as I'm concerned? The fact that he played special teams in the NFL under one of the best ST coaches in the league. He would be a great asset for our special teams unit.

I don't think this was a hasty decision - or at least I hope it wasn't. I'm sure that Coach Carey saw some positive things in him where he will be a good fit.
