OK - so what EXACTLY does it take to be a coach? Please name what it takes if you would because I have never been a coach or played a sport so I haven't personally had a coach for anything. I would like to learn about coaches and what it takes to be one. (BTW - this is a genuine request - I'm not trying to be a smart a$$)
Basically, a coach is a teacher. Think of what it takes to teach at the University level.

If I did it, anyone can.
University of Hard Knockers?

No, I taught hernia repair at Ball State.

This is panning out to be a great hire so far because he won't leave before the season starts.

RE: New NIU Asst
I have nothing against the new coach...but this was a bad hire..

We go from a coach who was a RB coach in the "Big East" last year, to a guy who has been an asst at "Nowhere University and CC"

Why not do what the USF coach did and hire a high school coach from a prime recruiting ground in your state (LIKE CHICAGO, OR WESTERN SUBURBS)... It would be different if we pulled a guy with a decent resume, but not this guy..

THe thing i hate about coaches is they feel the need to hire people they have worked with regardless of experience..

NFL experience .... and also actually PLAYING the position. He is pretty inspirational. Worked his a$$ off to get to be the player he became. An NIU grad - always a Huskie.
I realize he has never coached but what does it take to be a coach? Something GW doesn't have?
Every coach out there at one time had never coached. Somebody hired them to be a coach for the first time, right?

how about Garrett becoming a GA first if he wants to get into coaching. This is a ridiculaous suggestion

+1 and not getting drunk and in fights..

We have a lot of connections down there now and lots of schollys available next year. No reason we would not have success down there.

He hasn't been in Miami since he live there 15+ years ago.

RB is the simplest position to coach in football. Not much teaching relative to the other spots. RB playng experience is definitely not needed. If anyone's resume comes up short on this staff it is the OL coach. The OL coach is a key position on the staff and the Orange Bowl Huskies hired a guy with no experience. Grad ass to OL coach. THATS a big jump.

Ooops you missed a year.. He was grad asst in 2010 and 2011 and TE/FB coach in 2012.

I love this coach.. BIG TEN starter for 2 years after he overcame injuries..

Coached 2 years at high school before becoming a grad asst for 2 years..

I was positive he wouldn't be here this year and picked up by a bigger program...

Excuse me?!! That was a pretty crappy comment there Cartershaw. if GW was some kind of low life do you think Coach Doeren would have had him come to speak to the players last fall? Do you think Coach Novak would still think so highly of him?

I don't see any reason why suggesting that GW could possibly be a RB coach is all that far fetched.
It takes a knowledge of the game and I would assume it takes knowledge of how to play the position. You'd also have to be able to teach - as someone else pointed out. It requires patience with the student athletes. You'd have to be able to communicate & recruit. He has 4 years of NFL experience. What other skills would GW need for the job? No one has listed any skills that Garrett needs to have and doesn't. So I don't see why you all dismiss the idea as stupid.

Some of you thought PJ could be NIU's next head coach... what experience did HE have to be qualified as a HEAD coach at that time? None that I know of. He'd never been a head coach....and plenty of people on this board wanted him for NIU's HC.

So... fine...whatever.

The positives he has surrounded by GREAT coaches thru his playing and coaching careers, but I dare you to find such inexperience ever in BCS bowl team. Hell, we have not had such inexperience the 70's.

....hoping he is the real thing iy will only help us.....
