Yep. He's done as a Zip. What a moron.

Time for Carmelo Betancourt to step up.

Wow. UB had a player selling marijuana out of his dorm room back when I was a freshman. Wallace Hall, I think. He was dismissed almost immediately. I have to imagine the Zips will do the same thing.

What a break for Ohio! If he's not playing in Cleveland I can't imagine the Zips winning.

RE: Alex Abreu Arrested
This is really disappointing. The question is why would this kid do something so stupid? I actually feel really bad for Akron fans and in a way Ohio fans. If Ohio beats Akron in tournament I wanted it to be with all their horses. Unfortunately he isn't the first and won't be the last which is why no one should be throwing stones.

I would find it very hard to believe that none of his teammates would know this was going on. I honestly hope no one else on the team is involved.

Just really a sad situation.

"@PhilTrexler: Police: K9 detected large package of pot being shipped to UA guard Alex Abreu and undercover cops delivered. Abreu accepted, then arrested"

So somebody could mail you a pound of weed and if you accept it, you're the one who gets arrested even if you didn't know what was in the package?

I know I send kilos of pot to all my friends as a prank in the hopes that it gets sniffed out by a police dog and tracked.

Or if you're a dealer, you send it to a random person. If the K-9 dogs sniff it out they arrest the recipient instead of you, but if it goes through you stop by the next day and say "hey, I think UPS sent you my package by mistake, can I please have it?".

Seems like a great way to make sure your distribution routes don't get compromised.

If he signs for it then it belongs to him. My guess is this is not the first package tracked there. The DEA will follow the movements of packages for several months or even years before lowering the boom. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other arrest being made in other locations today. Very sad situation. If I am Akron I am praying this is contained to this one player.

Does anyone know who he rooms with?

there's more to it than that. I used to work for a financial services company and our Fraud dept worked with law enforcement to set up these kinds of buys to catch people making fraudulent purchases with stolen credit cards, etc. The police would have had additional contact with the suspect to confirm that they are aware of the contents of the package prior to receiving it. If they were unable to substantiate proof then they would simply intercept the package and delay or cancel delivery. If they did it right the accepting of the package was just the icing on the cake.

Too bad, its a sad situation.

RE: Alex Abreu Arrested
I think anyone who wants to think this is an isolated occurrence has no idea how prevalent pot is among basketball culture now and a long time before now. If you gave every team a drug test this minute and suspended every player who tested positive for pot, you would have a lot of shorthanded teams in conference tournaments. It is unusual to see a top player get busted for a large quantity like this, but anyone who is surprised to see college or pro basketball players who smoke the stuff hasn't been paying attention. There has never been the will to come down on this, hence basketball players only get busted for possession when they are stupid, rarely for failing drug tests which are not administered often enough and randomly enough to be a serious deterrent.

Or if you're a dealer and not a dumb college kid who thinks he's invincible you don't use the post office.

Yes sending an ass load of weed to a random person is awesome business! When the guy is caught you lose the drugs... When he is not caught you lose the drugs...

And oh yea, you hand the police something you mailed..

Correct. I'm assuming there had to be a history of this occurring at that address. I'm just amazed someone could be that stupid.

I have friends that are police officers, and my job at an emergency room near East Cleveland puts me in direct contact with a lot of unsavory people.

That, and the fact that someone on Zipsnation with a background in law enforcement posted that exact statement 20 minutes ago...

He did post the same thing.

If you think sending drugs by mail is uncommon, then why do they have drug-sniffing dogs at every post office?

And a headline article on Yahoo! the last few days dealt with the identical scenario.
