Congrats to Todd Smith. The UST Celts finished 3rd in regular season in Red River Conference but won the tourney yesterday. In so doing, they beat both the 1 and 2 seeds, each of whom had swept St Thomas during the regular season.

That kind of late season improvement and ability to deliver a timely winning streak against teams with comparable talent has eluded Rice, almost singularly among D-1 teams, since the advent of post season tournaments back in the 1970s. Many years of course we have haven't had the talent to do it, but when we have, we have much more frequently gone the other way and lost to an inferior team in the conference tourney.

St Thomas was one and done, losing by 8 to Georgetown of Kentucky in the first round. A GT/Ky player had 13 offensive rebounds in the game; sounds like a Big East recruit who got bad directions to Washington, DC.

NAIA plays a 32 team bracket at a single site over 7 days. The Final Four is tonight.

Interestingly for St Thomas, Georgetown is a final four team, as are both of UST's Red River Conference Rivals, whom they dispatched in succession at the RRAC tourney in order to earn their ticket.

All in all, a strong 4th season for Todd Smith starting up the program.

Hey, the 1995 SWC tournament semifinal was not Rice's fault!
