I'm pretty sure Rucker was dead set on coming to UAB regardless of who was coaching.
The problem with XCMD's recruiting practices were that he relied too heavily on trying to find diamond in the roughs. Also, he hung his hopes and dreams on getting transfers from other schools, which accounted for the vast majority of his star players. His success with players straight out of high school was very minimal.

Really? I don't think so. I thought Rucker was all Haase. Anyone know?
Drew did a recent article about Rucker and it clearly stated Davis recruited him first.
That's amazing. You know, Mike was good for a stud about every 1/20 recruits.
Davis recruited some great players to come to UAB. But they either didn't come (Cousins, Bledsoe) or they didn't pan out academically. We still had great players in AJ, Vaden, Millsap, Sanders.
It's when the academic restrictions got tight that Davis's recruiting handicapp became evident.

If hoopy Jones isn't gonna get to play, send him on his way elsewhere. Sign another 2013 recruit before the end of April or however mike Davis used to finish up his effortless recruiting.

Does that mean they weren't great players? You still have to evaluate their talent and recruit them to UAB. My point was that Davis had a 5% success rate (1 out of 20) in players he brought to UAB.
If you want high school recruits. I point to Purifoy, Rob Williams, AJ, Cam Moore.
Davis had a lot of problems at UAB, but lets not rewrite history to say he never did anything worthwhile.
This. Recruiting wasn't one of the issues I had with Davis. He got plenty of guys to come here who could play. Many didn't stay for whatever reason.

Getting back to the original post, only bad thing I see is that we get the 2-3 year cycle of total turnover where you get almost if not all players graduating at once w/ those left unproven/brand new to the program.

Davis was not a bad recruiter per se, as much as he was a bad team builder. He was also a late recruiter, something Haase is thankfully not. Davis won a lot of games, including some big games as it is easy to forget. He was 80% of the coach UAB needed, and it was clear that he wasn't going to be any more than that while he was here.

I think that will all work itself out by using redshirts/guys leaving/potential transfers/holding scholarships for the next year/etc.(I'm not advocating any one of these specifically, but they are all possibilities) The good thing right now is we have a large senior and freshmen class next season, so we will have a core group of freshmen and sophomores that get to grow together starting the next season.

A juco or two, a grad student transfer, and things will even out. I suspect that the coaching staff knows how many guys they have leaving at once and will act to balance things out.
I love how people on a message board see something like this and get all bent out of shape. It's the coach's profession, you think he's somehow missed it?

RE: 2013-2014 Returning Players
I try to think about one season at a time. That is, as a fan. Leave the rest up to the staff. That being said, next year should be really great. I'd say this squad could be as good or better than AJ and Sander's senior year and the Millsap year.

They would certainly flip if they discovered the media guides.
