This is true. It was an alternative to establishing the Metro as a football conference after some members objected and several left to form the Great Midwest. A couple of basketball schools were brought in, but the majority were already playing in the Great Midwest or Metro.

As others have said, It's been rumored for a while that MTSU & FAU could move early and take over our conf schedules.

The thing is, with ten teams set for 2013, the BE doesn't "need" two more teams that bad to make it worth the trouble.

I find it kind of odd that the BE is losing 7 basketball schools (C7), but may end up gaining 7 basketball schools (Memphis, UCF, Houston, SMU, Temple + Tulane and ECU). That is why I think that ESPN may be asking to have ECU and Tulane to join a year early.

Basketball schedules are never finalized until the summer before the season due to so many teams sharing arenas with NBA and NHL teams. Thus while some games are already scheduled (OOC), most conference games are not finalized until after NBA and NHL schedules come out.

It may actually be more for basketball than it is for football.

was looking at 18 team league 18 games- 162 conference games
now looking at 10 team league 18 games- 90 conference games
(ND will be gone)

If you go 2 more you at least are back to 108 conference games. Also, I think ESPN sees some potential in ECU basketball and may want to take a flyer on that(it would be funny if ECU comes in and makes tourney next year while Rutgers doesn't).

yeah but with the $10 million bridge year bb contract set to be reduced with the C7 defections anyway, is it worth the trouble and expense for teams to leave early? I don't think so. thus why I am not sure they will pay extra money to leave early.

It stands to reason that ESPN expected this to go down, which is why they put the clause in the bridge year contract to begin with. I don't know, but to me this whole thing just smells like a basketball decision; which is why I suspect that right after the C7 departure date is announced I kind of expect that the BE will announce that ECU and Tulane will be joining in 2013 with the other new arrivals.

My thinking is 16-2+5-7+2. And on top of that the BE gets a Championship football game, but I guess that the next move belongs to the ACC and Notre Dame.

Like I said earlier Houston has a different arrangement. I said 0-500,000 before.....We have one Tournament credit....Subtract that from the 500,000....Thats what we owe...Stevo could tell us what the amount is, I'm sure....

I found articles relating to three of the four public institutions that are leaving...but nary a word on Houston's exit fees. Either I didn't look deep enough, or Houston is playing this very close to the vest. I'm willing to admit that I just don't know in Houston's case. Nor do I know in the case of the two private schools, who wouldn't release that information for anything short of a subpoena. In any case, I don't see any of them paying the full amount anyway. I do think Houston will owe something, though.

Best of luck to all of you, while I am at it.
