RE: Join C7 in BigEast, & CUSA for football
You're right about the NCAA hoops revenue.

While I’m not convinced that the private schools of the Big East would even want to add a football-playing public school, another financial factor to consider beyond TV contracts is NCAA tourney payout.

That payout is based on earning 1 “unit” (latest unit value is $1.59 million paid out over six years) for each game a conference plays in the tourney (championship game excluded).

The AAC kept the units earned by the BCS-era Big East during that conference’s final six seasons; however, those units are dropping off each year and are being replaced by AAC–earned units.

Just for a perspective, over the last six seasons (2008-13) we were in CUSA, that conference totaled 11 units (our 5 units for 2008 were taken away). Converting those 11 units to the latest payout rate would total $17.5 million or $1.5 million for each of 12 members. During those same six seasons, the old Big East earned a staggering 123 units which would total a whopping $195.6 million or $12.2 million for each of 16 members.

Since the split, the American has earned 19 units during the past three seasons. The Big East has earned 29 units during the same time frame. Both Conferences had title runs during (UConn in 2014 and Nov in 2016).

I heard from numerous sources that the BEast offered Memphis, UConn and Cincy when they first split off. The condition being that each had to find a home for football. Not sure if they're still up for it or not.

My thinking is we ride out the AAC another 2 years - or until realignment happens again, whichever comes first. Meanwhile, we have the discussions and crunch the numbers. Then, be ready to make the decision.
