Well, for starters, the name immediately brings to mind the term "metrosexual". Plus the Metro was a basketball conference. It has ZERO football history, credibility, or name recognition with football fans. Even in basketball the name is useless. The average recruit was all of 2 years old when the Metro disbanded. If there was any value left in that ancient brand the C7 would have snapped it up. They didn't because there isn't.

Neither does this new conference, but this is a name that people will remember not to mention one that can catch on. Also every conference has Schools or Cities that some how don't fit the criteria of the conference name either by size or location etc it is something that can not be politically correct this day and age for what ever reason, but The Metro Conference could be as close as politically correct as you will get with a name than what might get suggested.

I agree...it was a great post.

In today's world, the name Metro sounds D II-ish. IMO, it doesn't live up to today's marketing standards.

Do you want to list the conferences, besides the Big East obviously, that do have names that live up to today's marketing standards?

Why do I need to do that? They aren't the ones looking for new names. The closest thing lately was the divisions in the B1G and you see how that turned out. It is VERY important to get it right.

I want to get an idea of what you consider a name that does "live up to today's marketing standards." Maybe you don't really have an idea of what you'd consider a name that does that.

Or are you saying that ANY new conference name sucks because it's new?

Mountain West would be one example. The 4 P's of marketing are price, promotion, product and place. The MW does are very good job at defining place with its name "Mountain".

A name like Metro was good in the 70's when the concept of cities being defined as Metropolitan areas rather than incorporated limits came to be. Its a name used for a lot of high school conferences now and it signifies something local instead of regional.

The use of "League" as an identifier is becoming more common. Patriot League, Summit League and Horizon League are examples of newer conference names being created. It sounds classier than "conference" in most cases.

The very worst thing the oBE can do is call itself Conference Mid America or something like that. That would confuse fans with CUSA and the MAC.

"Victory League" is one that might be good for promotion (success) and product (wins). It might raise some eyebrows which is what this group of schools needs (attention).

I'm not down on the Metro conference at all. I still remember having the Metro tourney in Biloxi back in the early 90s... I loved that. It was USM and Louisville in the final, with Louisville pulling it out by 1. All I've wanted since about 1985 is an all-sports Metro with USM included. I don't think Tulane was ever in the Metro, but I'd like to have them as well, and ideally UH.

Louisville was the school that killed the Metro. We came oh-so-close to making it happen. We were even talking to Penn State back in the early 1990s. Damn Louisville and that pederast flower-wearing coach of theirs.

Or are you saying that ANY new conference name sucks because it's new?

There are conferences that have names that are "timeless" in my opinion. The ACC, PAC and SEC. The name defines them and while they may have accepted schools outside of their geographic name, the name still very marketable and applicable. The Big XII and Big Ten are both still very marketable today but have more limitations than the other three. I personally believe those marketing limitations were behind the whole "B1G" moniker. They are going to change the division names again soon. The names need to fit what today's marketing standards demand. Obviously you try for something "timeless" but sometimes fall back to something fadish that could become timeless (the use of the word "cool" comes to mind as a simile).

Some names sound like 20, 30 or 40 years ago. They sound historic...or just plan old, as in another generation. The Metro is just that. It's kinda like an afro. A word you hear and it reminds you of an era. There are people who have them today but you think of that era just the same when you see that person.
