Perplexed By This Group Of Players
I thought this group of players had finally matured after the fiasco in Atlantis and would realize how much is at stake when you play on national tv, but based on our play tonight I guess they are still a piece of work in progress. The core of this team are juniors and this is the 3rd year they have played college ball together and should have known that this was not a good time for a weak effort. Xavier is not a bad team, but neither are they a really good team. A victory tonight would have given us more credibility that we could beat a solid team on the road out of conference, but instead by losing to them it just gives the national media more ammunition to bash us.
It was very evident from the get go that they weren't ready to play and to me that is very perplexing and frustrating. I'm not giving up on them, but if they don't start showing more maturity, then it will be another short stay in the NCAA tournament. Come on guys time is getting short to get this attitude out of your system.

Games like this happen to all the top teams and this year it has happened a ton. The energy in the first half was just plain bad, in the second half we played the way we had been playing. Unfortunately for Memphis they aren't ever allowed a slip up due to the conference.

Oh I understand players have games where they are not mentally prepared to play, but this game was going to have a lot of influence on the national perception of this team. No if's, and's, or but's they should have been eager to play in front of a national audience, but instead, they came out and laid a big, giant egg, especially in the first half.

inspite of allowing a freshman two guard pose as a point guard dictate the tempo most of the game and shooting 6-17( shooting at our normal 68% clip we could have added 5 more points to the final score or more) from the foul line. The team played one helluva game. Okay, rebounding well....Most of the disparity was in the first half when Shaq was in foul trouble. The second half we out rebounded them 20-14.

I really hated the Tempo of that game and the way we allow them to walk the ball down without getting and keeping the ball out of the freshman hand. The second half was betterafter adjustment but slow in materializing.

I agree our performance was disappointing. Hopefully we will learn again from yet another sub-par performance on the big stage. Maybe this time the lessons will stick and we will be ready for the NCAAs.

We have improved, but the loss last night will cost us quite a bit in seeding and make our path more difficult.

We choke on the big stage. We have proven that every single opportunity. Teams take on the personality of the coach, 4 years of choking. Hopefully at some point Pastner will be able to get his teams past it.

Maybe our guys look at the cameras, see the ESPN logo and freak-out or something, I donno. At first I didn’t worry about it but we have not won a single important game on the national stage in this era.

Oh well…

This was definitely a golden opportunity with the country watching to some degree and we blew it by strolling out and going through the motions through the first half. Very disappointing that they always fail to realize the stage they are on. Every single talking head that ws waiting to see about us just said, their league must be that bad. Xavier is not very good!!

I don't understand Geron's comments after the game, saying things like "we played like Xavier was just going to hand us our 19th straight win" - and in the first half that appears to be true. Man, how can your mindset NOT be to come into Xavier's home and beat the crap out of them? and it was their 2nd string! AND the NCAA committee chairman (Xavier's AD) was in attendance.

This has got to be the worst loss of the season.

pastner is like the little boy that cried wolf. when your coach keeps piping off about every team you play is a good team and well coached, and you continually stomp them into the ground, you're going to stop paying attention. we finally met up with a good/mediocre team with a good coach. i'm not saying he should get in front of the cameras and say "gee, some of these cusa schools really stink". he just needs to be a bit more conservative when discussing opponents and stop playing them up as much.

Awesome that you think the coaching staff says the same thing to the players as they do to the media. You are extra hilarious today; which is saying a lot.

I agree this is our worst loss of the season, at least so far.

Many analysts had said they were waiting on this game before admitting we are for real. So much for that. Not only did we lose we played uninspired and looked awful. At times we appeared totally lost. I hate to say it but in the first half we looked scared to death.

This is the first game in years that none of my buds called to discuss the game, and I’m glad. I sure as heck wasn’t gonna call any of them either.

Turns out all the criticism before this game was well deserved, how we hadn't been tested, beat up on crappy teams etc, and we kind of proved them all right last night with losing to the first mediocre team we had played since December.

Get real Mimi. We haven’t beaten a single team in the top 25 so why do we deserve to be in the top 25?
