RE: So, there is a Big East meeting on Friday?
I heard the meeting was concerning the revoking Memphis' membership in the nBE over our loss to Xavier last night.

I hope it isn't to announce that the C7 are leaving effective July 1, 2013; taking the Big East name with them; and that none of the new BE members will get any of the exit fee money........but we all know that is exactly what is about to happen.

This is becoming a sick joke for all of us Memphis fans. Memphis paid exit fees to get out of C-USA only to go to a bigger mess!!!! The C7 might be gone in a few months, the Big East name might be gone in a week or 2, we will get none of the former Big East members exit fee, the TV money is a joke and all we will be left with is former C-USA teams. Suddenly the Mountain West looks like the big leagues!!

The Big East is still a better conference than the Mountain West. They are at worst equal. Besides our long term future will be in a conference like the ACC or Big 12, so running off to the west will not help us there. For now we are in the best position available for our long term future. Stay close to where you want to go, improve football, improve attendance, and kiss some ass of better conferences until we get an invite.

Compared to what we left and what we thought we were leaving for, it was a positive move.
Compared to what we would have stayed with and what we are leaving for, it is still a positive move, just not as glamorous as what we thought it would be.

We're going to be in a smaller version of cusa with temple/s.florida more than likely so how is that going to be better than the mountain west in anything? Also,if we end up in a better conference it wouldn't matter if we were in conference Disney Land if we improve on down the road.

They are not leaving until the ACC gets raided. There is no telling when that could happen and depending on how many are taken Memphis might slide in with them.

They are still in the conference though. Also, this is about getting our entire AD in a better position not just basketball scheduling. Besides, financially the MWC offers I think a little less money and our travel would increase significantly.

You say this as if it is inevitable but unfortunately it's not. Our athletic program is on the upswing compared to the last 5-7 yrs but still behind where we were in the 70s. We didn't get a sniff back then & we won't in the near future unless there are a lot of changes at our university & with our university's standing in its relationship with the city & state.
Our university needs a separate identity from the city. As long as our university is tied to the city for facilities we won't be taken seriously as a contending program for ACC or B12 membership. The city has historically used our university to finance its facility needs & that works against the university & depletes its resources. The TBOR annually relegates us to a status with ETSU & MTSU, & community colleges in terms of funding & support. And our university administration has failed in leadership in every case since CC Humpreys & every AD during that same span.
We continue to say one day we will get that opportunity but nothing is ever done to set the necessary course for accomplishment. We keep repeating the same weak attempts by addressing the symptoms (coaches & private athletic funding) while the underlying causes continue to be completely ignored. As we continue to ignore the past underlying causes, we are domed to repeat the same failed course to accomplishment. We need OC facilities, our own board of regents, separate state funding considerations, a strong university president who sees increased funding & new resources as his/her first job criteria & a developing alumni organization that substantially increases its support (this will only come once the city gets its hand out of the university purse).
There are already 64 schools in the power conferences & no more than 8 potenial additional slots (probably only 4) available over the next 10-20 yrs (since the SEC, PAC & B1G are not part of the Memphis equation). And there are 8-10 schools with better credentials vying for those slots -- better credentials is much more than just success on the field & in the gym. We can't continue to ignore the underlying causes of our status & expect anything different than history has given us.

There is no doubt that every team in the conference would bolt at the first opportunity but the same is true for the MWC. If the Pac 12 decided to expand there is not one team that would turn down an invite from the MWC. Any conference that is not the ACC, SEC, BIG, Big 12, or Pac 12 is relatively unstable and open for poaching. I just do not see any advantage to being in the MWC instead of the Big East.

You are certainly correct that the AD and much of the University has failed in general and there is a reason we are in the position we are in today. However, steps are being taken in the right direction and some form a plan is in place for the first time in a long time. We may never get an invite to one of the big boy conferences, obviously I have no idea. However, when you look at who we are competing against for spots there are only two or maybe three schools that have a substantially better case at this point than us. I also think given our long term potential for growth that when expansion time comes that will be taken into consideration.
Also, we have no idea how many spots will open up and what conference they will open up with. Texas and OU could bolt for the PAC 12 (although that would not happen in the near future) and that would start an entire wave of movement. Maryland could have their exit fees reduced dramatically which then causes the SEC, BIG, and Big 12 to poach ACC members. That alone could open 4-8 spots which would give us a great chance to get in. My only point is that at this moment I see no reason or benefit for leaving the Big East for the MWC; less money and increased travel. You can say they have "more stability" but all that really means is none of the big time conferences want any of their members, which means your level of competition is no better than the Big East.
