Basketball takes longer than football because the rosters are a lot smaller. In two years if we are not close to competing for MAC tourney championships then we can start to wonder if the grass is greener. For now we should hope this is a learning curve for a very young team!

What???

That doesn't make any sense at all. The rosters are smaller.. which means in basketball it's much easier to improve. It's a star driven game. Two legitimately good players would be enough to make NIU a .500 team.

I respectfully disagree with you. In football you have a roster of 105 players (85 scholarships). You don't have to play youth right away. You can develop and redshirt them. NIU hoops has had to play way too many frosh and sophs this year. Teams .500 or better don't have their starting lineups stacked with freshman and walk-ons. Still think we are two years away from being able to judge anything. If NIU were to make a coaching change right now wouldn't we say the new coach would need a few recruiting classes to get his players in? We need consistency at the helm. I'm not suggesting he is right the guy but just stating I feel it's too early to judge.

You don't play youth right away in football, because you can't.. you're making my point for me. It takes a long time to build a football program from nothing.

Basketball you can get to .500 with a couple good freshman. Football that would never happen. You need 20+ solid players, and you need them to be in their third, fourth or fifth year.

It's simply much harder to build a good football program. It requires so many more good players and more experience. Not nearly as many 18 year olds step on campus ready to compete at the college level in football as they do in basketball.

An NIU Basketball Survey was just sent to basketball season ticket holders. Most questions relate to the Convo and parking, but it does ask the question of overall how satisfied you are with the game experience and if you would recommend a friend attend a basketball game.

Anyone know the status on Dre Henley? In his 2nd year at a JC and had heard rumors he might end up back at NIU.

Its possible, he will be here next year. Monty got Nader, Springs and Henley to come here. I know things havent worked out, but those were 3 top state of Illinois recruits.

Dre Henley- Hutchinson Community College. 6pts a game, 52%fg, 4.5rebs and 16.7%3pt as a reserve. He's shooting 700% from the free-throw line. He sounds like a older Darell Bowie to me. I'am not sure he is what we need.

700% FT is pretty good.

i have the feeling this was the key recruit that would have made a difference.

700% FT is pretty good.

That would be our only chance to win, if we get 7 points for every FT made. 6 points a game at a community college, hmm.

Why in the Wide World of Sports did Springs not get minutes?

MM feel Balls, Baker et al were better players?

That also concerns me that Highsmith could decide to leave too at some point.

Well you do realized Baker and Balls play PG and Springs, uh, doesn't, right?

I love how a thread about NIU having 7 straight 20 loss seasons, which Monty was apart of 2 of with the youngest team in the country, has turned into a thread questioning MM. Clearly he took over a great program.

RE: Seven in a row.........
Watching most of the games this year, I have seen very little improvement from game one (or the first game Nader played in) to the EIU game. I believe the coaching staff should take the blunt of the blame. Good coaches can at least get something.
How many of us have said this year that it cannot get worst after several games? Four wins (you cannot count Judson) in the second year of a contract does not look good. Is there a college program that would recruit MM as a head coach after seeing his body of work for 2 years?
RPI 324 out of 347. Yes, there are 323 teams better than NIU.

Having this conversation anymore is pointless. Blame who you want, Montgomery is going nowhere.

Yes, I believe Monty could get another D1 coaching job. AD's and coaches around the country feel the problem is NIU not Monty. Monty is thought of very highly around the country. He was voted best assistant in the bigten by the head coaches. Monty and Kathy Bennett didnt become stupid coaches all of a sudden. Yes, it would be nice to see improvement but it doesnt always happen like that. I will say it for the hundreth time, look at IU under Crean. The Montegomery is a bad coach because we havent seen enough improvement is silly!

Improvement, there was a lot of improvement from the WMU game to the second time we played them. EMU, the second time around should also tell us something.
