What if Dept.: Corporations pays to change school's name to their name
I realize this seems far fetched and hope it remains that, but schools are selling their naming rights to stadiums, and other buildings to the highest bidder. Bowls are named after corporations with the older bowls barely hanging on to their original names, so what is the next step? Years ago I would not, nor most people believe what we are seeing today coming to past.
I live in Mesa Az. close to Arizona State Univ. so I will give an example using them. University of Phoenix and Lifelock spends lots of money on ads and both are located here so they would be the logical top 2 to buy the naming of the school for themselves. I would figure since Univ. of Phx. has the NFL Cardinals' stadium already they would wait on the Cardinals, so Lifelock would be the most likely. Imagine Lifelock University formerly known as Arizona State. Has a ring to it doesn't it? I wonder what school Walmart, Haliburton, would buy. What corporate name would you like on your school?

Since "Whole Universities" are rarely on TV, but only their sports teams, seems the better investment is just to sponsor a whole university's sports department.

benefactors have changed the name of colleges before. samford in birmingham was once howard college. pretty the same thing happened in memphis with rhodes college that was once southwestern college.

Wouldnt be shocked since, at some point, major revenue producing programs will spin off from their universities.

RE: What if Dept.: Corporations pays to change school's name to their name
FACT: Wake Forest University used to actually be in Wake Forest, NC, just north of Raleigh. The RJ Reynolds Corporation (specifically the Reynold's family) wanted to build them in new school on land that they would be given (located right next to the company HQ) if they would move their campus to Winston Salem and rename their school to Reynolds University. This occurred in the early 50's.
WFU took the money and the new campus on the land that they were given; the only thing they did not do was accept the name.
It could happen one day, who knows?

That's pretty good local knowledge...not trying to be a grammar biatch, but it is Bancorpsouth...I actually use both.
I could actually see something like that happening and would be okay with it. In our position, it can only help.

They did change the name of the campus to the Reynolda Campus. Almost Every building is named after something Reynolds related.
Duke changed their name from Trinity because the Duke family, which are also the namesakes of Duke Energy.
I'm just waiting to see that big McMahon check so that we can finally be SmackDown University.

"Tampax Tampon Field at Vagisil Stadium?" Really!?! Really!!! Really???!
Seriously, though, I hate sometimes when the name of a prominent and beloved figure has his or her name removed from a stadium and replaced by a corporation's name...(Exhibit A: Joe Robbie & Robert F. Kennedy)...I don't care how much $$$$ is offered UAB, anything that already has Gene Bartow's name on it is off limits, & would probably be met with maximum anger and resistance by the majority of Blazer Nation if such an atrocity were to take place here. I promise you, it would not go over well at all.
