Dolan would be a great Pope
NYC Cardinal Timmothy Dolan's name is being thrown around at the Vatican. This guy would be great. Knowledgeable, strong in his convictions, doesn't have one foot in the grave, and is a people person.

He's also candid enough to scare the powers that be. So expect the usual low key, older than old pope that we've come to love and admire.

Have to admit, I've drifted away from the Catholic Church ever since all the sexual abuse business. It seemed more rampant than isolated. Nothing against Catholicism, just some of its . . . many representatives.

Then, there are the cross-dressing club visiting priests in the Vatican. Can't make this stuff up. Used to be proud to be Catholic, sigh.

Odd, the same people who "love it" when we bash Christians and Catholics, get highly offended when people mock the gay community.

Freakishly Odd and open to Mocking

Wow, that's a jump. Start with a thread on the pope and it jumps to bashing a democratic president. Always accusations of an anti-Christ (whatever that is) in politics. I’m old enough to remember when it was Henry Kissinger.

I must not have enough to do today, sitting here reading this stuff.

Oh yes, but it's perfectly acceptable to bash the Catholic Church here. I started the thread on Dolan, and since it began we've learned the Dolan is a perv, and the entire Catholic religion is open to mocking.

Our president who has kept the country in a perpetual recession..............he's untouchable.

I'm Catholic, but I'm an am embarrassed, ashamed, disenfranchised, stunned Catholic. What has happened is beyond sad and disheartening. Healing for many is impossible. Who do you trust?

This horror has nearly cost me my faith. Any honest person will acknowledge that any bashing of the Church is earned by the Church, it's priests and its so-called leaders.

But any honest person must also acknowledge that this giant pox of sexual abuse is not restricted to Catholics alone. Having said that does not reduce the culpability or the accountability of the Church in any way.

RE: Dolan would be a great Pope
I'm not so sure that I would abandon my faith over the problems of humans. What they are showing society is that they are a mirror of ourselves. If there is an epidemic within the faith it would signal the same problems within society as a whole. I guess I was taught that we all come up short in the eyes of God and that is why forgiveness is a pillar of the church. What happens when there are no churches teaching forgiveness, or a moral fiber within society?

I wonder what the world will be like down the road, fortunately I will not have to worry about that much more longer. I do worry about the world that I'm leaving my children and grandchildren. I doubt that they will quite have the life style and standard of living that I have had. That is my conservative nature.

Always proud to be a Bronco.

Forgiveness is indeed a pillar of the church, but I'm guessing forgiveness would be slow and grudging if my or your children or grand children were the victims of "men of God" sexual abuse. It's easy to forgive in the abstract, maybe not so easy when you or your loved ones are themselves victims.

I've talked to a few close friends who happen to be Catholic. They've expressed very similar thoughts.

RE: Dolan would be a great Pope
To judge many by the actions of a few is not necessarily a good thing. In any other venue we'd call it stereotyping and many would be appalled. But for some reason many are selective in their stereotyping.

I'm Catholic, but have been attending a Methodist Church for 6 years. Not because I have anything against the church, but rather I can't find a priest I can relate to. Father Grathwalt at St. Thoms was by far the best I ever had. The last priest I had could barely speak English and was difficult to follow.

One of things I admire about the Catholic Church is that they stick by their traditions. One tradition that would cure a lot of ills is to let priest marry.
