MAC Indoor T&F Championship This Weekend @ EMU (Entries)
http://www.emueagles.com/documents/2013/...df?id=2735

Latipha Cross, the subject of the thread about the EMU runner who has overcome tremendous obstacles, is running the 400M and one leg of the 4 x 400M relay.

Our FB WR, Donald Scott, is the #1 seed in the triple jump.

UT women should dominate the distance events and appear to have a strong LJ contingent.

Shaun Barber, Akron's sensational Freshman pole vaulter is worth
the price of admission. Shaun already has the NCAA lead this season.

Shaun usually wipes out his competition on the first vault. Then he
uses his remaining vaults to assault the WORLD record.

Definitely an exciting athlete. Harkens back to the MAC glory days in T &F when Wottle, Crawford, Tinker and the like were winning Olympic gold. Is Barber really near a WR? Last I knew his best was a ways under the current indoor standard.

FWIW, EMU has three FB players in the championship:

Donald Scott (WR) and Ryan Brumfield (RB) Jumps

and Bronson Hill (RB) Sprints

Looking at the seedings throughout, KSU looks pretty strong. Ought to be a very competitive meet!

Are you talking men or women? I don't follow women's that close, but I know Kent is strong. In men's, Kent probably finishes third behind Akron and Eastern Michigan. Kent's overall team is solid, but they don't have enough to offset the amount of points Akron and EMU can rack up at the top.

For example, Akron will dominate the field events. They could go 1-2-3 in the pole vault, get three of the top 5 in long jump, 3 in the top 4 in hepathlon. That's on top of having 3-4 other guys who could win their events.

Just based off seed times/distances, this is how the men's competition breaks down: 1. Akron 157, 2. EMU 124, 3. Kent 104, 4. Buffalo 74, 5. Central Michigan 60.

Granted, track meets (or any sport) aren't won on paper, but Akron has a lot of wiggle room to work with.

So sad that there's only 5 men's teams left for Indoor. When I ran in the MACs there were 12.

Six when I started running but only six teams. Ball, Eastern and CMU joined while I was running, IIRC. Rick Dowswell, Al Schotterman, Gerald Tinker, Sid Sink, Dave Wottle, Haisley Crawford all won NCAA titles or Olympic gold from those years and there were many others who were Olympians including Bruno Pauletto and Jacques Accambray. The young man from Akron may get there but apart from that the competition is not comparable to the glory years. Wrestling has survived better in the MAC, it seems. On the women's side there are some excellent athletes but not a lot of threats at the national level. Pity.

Day 1 in the books. A lot of prelims, but there were a decent number of finals, particularly in the field events. Looks like the men did about half of them and the women the other half and will alternate the events tomorrow.

Kent swept the LJ. Solid performances from all three jumpers. Impressive. UT took 1,2 and 6 in the 5,000 with huge margin of victory for one and two. BG has yet to score- I believe they are still in the redshirt process with a number of their best athletes including Jeanette Pettigrew who was a very good sprinter for them last year indoors. Tomorrow will see a lot of finals-I'm torn about running up there or going to watch the UT Bracketbuster.

I'm surprised EMU is doing as well as they are the 1st day, mostly field events.

Today should be fun!

In men's, EMU put itself to finish second, but doubt they can catch Akron. The pole vault is still to come and the Zips could go 1-2-3, plus Akron has enough in the other running/field events to win another indoor championship.

Kent's women demolished the field and set a record for winning margin.

EMU finished 2nd. Latipha Cross, subject of the ESPN feature, finished 3rd in the 400M and was strong in the 4x400M.

After the meet was over I saw her in a boot. Turf toe. Does that young lady ever get a break???
