RECAP: Following five straight losses, Mississippi State had a bye this week. For the players, it was a time to get back to the basics and fundamentals. The coaches used the time to get out on the recruiting trail.

SATURDAY: Florida, 11:30 a.m.

SITE: Scott Field, Starkville.

TV: Jefferson Pilot.

Scouting the Gators

OFFENSE: The offense starts with the aerial attack powered by quarterback Chris Leak. As the 6-foot, 195-pound sophomore goes, so go the 20th-ranked Gators. In a 45-30 win over Arkansas, Leak was 23-of-38 for 322 yards and three touchdowns. But in a 24-21 loss to LSU the next week, Leak was 15-of-33 for 142 yards. He is averaging 8.2 yards per attempt and is the second-ranked QB in the SEC according to QB ratings. He is first in total passing yards with 1,571. Disrupting his rhythm early is key for Mississippi State.

Traditionally, Florida has the athletes at receiver who can run by opposing cornerbacks. This season is no different. Andre Caldwell is averaging 15 yards per catch and O.J. Small is averaging 12. Caldwell had a 62-yard TD catch in the Middle Tennessee State win.
The Gators can run the ball with 6-foot, 215-pound junior Ciatrick Fason, who gains five yards per carry, but it all starts with Leak.

DEFENSE: Florida's attacking defense is based in speed. Lots of it. Linebacker Channing Crowder leads the team with 49 tackles and two sacks. His motor is nonstop and getting a body on him is essential. Fellow linebacker Earl Everett is nearly as impressive and the duo help make up one of the top linebacking units in the nation.
The pressure from a swarming front seven has led a talented but inexperienced secondary to contribute to the team's 10 interceptions.

INTANGIBLES: While the win over Middle Tennessee State was easy for the Gators, the practice week was not. Coach Ron Zook spent much of it explaining a bizarre confrontation he had with several fraternity members in September. ... Because of an earlier postponement due to a hurricane, Florida was not off last week. The Gators have not had a bye since Week 1.
