Samford requires about 60 hours of prerequisite courses. Auburn requires 90. So most students do 3 years of undergrad before starting pharmacy school at Auburn.

UAB is starting a "pre-med" BS degree (forget exactly what it's called) which I suppose would be very helpful in those situations. Or, if you don't know if you're going to do medicine, optometry, or pharmacy or something like that

Like I said, look at the rankings. If one school is ranked significantly higher than the other then price may not be an issue.

From what i have heard, Samford can be a little snobby, it is small, and is in its own little bubble. Those are the downsides.

My wife is in her first year at Samford. It's not significantly more expensive than Auburn, and you don't have to move to Auburn. There wasn't really much thought. It's hard to say you "like" a school while it's kicking your ass, but she's happy with her experience there so far.

The vibe of her class is different from the undergrad Samford population, since people there are there because they wanted to go to pharmacy school and got accepted. The undergrads (or their parents) typically are seeking out a very conservative college experience with curfews, no coed dorms and no alcohol, so it's very, very different from the normal college atmosphere. The professional schools hardly ever interact with the undergrads.

At UAB, they're trying to start some kind of collaboration with Samford to do a more research-based curriculum for people that are more interested in that than retail pharmacy, but those in that program would still be Samford students. It's not confirmed yet though. My wife's professors made it sound like it was not far off, but she got accepted at Samford and didn't want to wait around.

Remember this is McWhorter School of Pharmacy versus whatever Auburn calls their pharmacy school. The pharmacy school, from what I understand, is much more expensive than just going to college at Auburn.

Auburn's school is Harrison School of pharmacy. And there is a pretty significant price difference. It does cost more than regular undergrad tuition. HSOP costs about 20k per academic year for in-state students. MSOP costs about 32k per year. So over 4 years of pharmacy school that adds up to almost 50k.

Courses with labs have always been more expensive than lecture only courses at every school. I would suppose nearly every course in any medical oriented course would be a lab course. Private schools are usually smaller in enrollment so they have to make more off each student than a public school with its tax supported base income and larger enrollment.

If a student can live at home and attend Samford, it may be more equivalent in total cost than paying to live on or near campus at AU.

She's at home and doesn't have a meal plan or anything.
