The New Big East will Cease to Exist?
I predicted many months ago that by the time 2015 comes around and Navy is set to join the Big East will no longer exist. As the days go by, I am looking more and more like a prophet.

If it exists on 7/1/13 it'll exist in 2015.

Yep it's either going to die really quickly or it will live in some form. Cincy and UCONN have the ability to kill the league if they want to, but it will likely cost each millions in credits and exit fees. That's their decision. If it lives to 7/1/13 then it's not going to die because it won't dissolve and there will be too many with no other option to let it die.

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think UC is going anywhere. Let's just deal with it and all do the best we can.

As long as
Cincinnati doesn't want a league with Miami-O and AKron and Toledo
UCF and USF don't want to be in a league with FIU and FAU
Memphis doesn't want Middle Tennessee
UAB doesn't want Troy and USA
USM would rather play Houston, ECU and Marshall than UNT or Georgia State
Tulane doesn't want ULL or ULM
SMU doesn't want UNT
There will be a lower-FBS league that looks down on its MAC/CUSA/Sun Belt neighbors.

Why must we bombard the posters we disagree with vitriolic rhetoric? Can we not all get along?
Johnny: some of those schools may not have a choice...

I don't want UAB around, so please leave them out. In a very short period of time I'd much rather have Charlotte and ODU around than them.

Agree, that is the important date. UConn and Cincinnati hold all the power, if they join with the C7, Big East Football will be dissolved, Then UC, UConn and C7 will divide the $68 million 9 ways.

The point is that there are enough of them to cobble together a league. Travel costs are an annoyance, but not a deal-breaker until you hit Houston-to-San Diego or Omaha-to-Spokane distances.
Travel costs and a pittance in TV money might convince schools in CUSA-West to trade CUSA-East for ULL, ULM, Texas State and Arky State. They're not going to convince SMU to accept equality with UNT if there's any other option, and there is.
The proud/elitist schools stick together and find enough partners to get to 8 or 9. And bondsjohn, that might mean taking UAB. UAB would move to get away from Troy, even if the money were the same. I don't know if Charlotte or ODU would leave CUSA or the "American South" for ECU and the "Metro Conference."

Actually, I was thinking the C7 may want to check into the Metro Conference name.

You really think Charlotte doesn't want ECU around to prop up their football attendance and to be in a basketball league with Memphis, Cincy, UCONN, and Temple?

Oh they might. If Uconn and Cincy are still there, if your basketball programs stay strong. I'm just saying that if the trend moves towards more regional leagues, UAB would be one of the schools objecting loudly enough to change conferences over it.

UAB might want to change conferences, but it takes 2 to tango.

UAB can object as loudly as they want to, but they'd got major issues right now. Their basketball program has fallen on very hard times and the state of Alabama refuses to even allow their football program a chance to succeed. If they can't solve both those issues they aren't getting anywhere.

RE: The New Big East will Cease to Exist?
There's no real reason why the Big East would dissolve. I understand why people bring it up as a possible nuclear option, but believe me that it's a last last last last last last resort. It's realistically not on the radar at all, not even for the Catholic 7. Even if UConn and Cincinnati leave, there are 8 all-sports schools left in the league that likely have no desire to head back to C-USA or the MAC.
There is a big-time difference between being disappointed with a TV contract and a league that's about to be dissolved. Even if the Big East took that $130 million per year ESPN offer 2 years ago, Pitt and Syracuse would have still left the Big East for the ACC and pretty much everything other than the failure to build a western division with Boise State would have occurred... yet the league is still standing. The main adjustment for Big East fans is simply confronting the reality that it's not anywhere close the "Big Six" discussion anymore in terms of financial power and simply won't be treated like it was 2 years ago.
UConn, Cincinnati and USF are literally the only 3 schools in all of FBS that will be making less conference-level revenue (TV and postseason revenue) in 2014 than they do in the current BCS system. Believe me - they have every right to complain. They have been screwed like no one else in all of conference realignment. Everyone else, though, really has to look at it compared to their former C-USA or MAC homes. Even if the Big East is really just C-USA with a different name, the problem is that C-USA is now the Sun Belt with a different name. It's not exactly crazy that a conference where 70% of the schools were in C-USA or the MAC last year would end up with a TV contract that's only worth a little bit of a bonus over a C-USA contract with many of those exact same schools that was signed not too long ago. However, the move to the Big East was necessary because sometimes you've got to do it simply to maintain your status quo position. It might be like running on a conference realignment treadmill (where you're doing a lot of work without actually going anywhere) instead of climbing a mountain to new heights, but it's still better than falling off a cliff (which is unfortunately what's happening to UConn, Cincinnati and USF).
