RE: MTSU vs. Memphis in football....I love it.....
I guess everyone who is saying that Memphis doesn't care about football his missed the money they have thrown at football as of late as well as the WAY they won the last three games of the season last year? They didn't just win, they blew out the last three opponents.
Moreover, 5 bowl games as well as a trip to at least the NIT (usually the NCAA) every year since 2000.
People claim we keep bringing basketball every time football is mentioned.
Truthfully? It also seems that when Memphis is dominating during basketball season people start with the 'well, Memphis football is an embarrassment" crap.

Yes, MTSU has reached the epitome of success with victories over a 16-45 (2007-2012) Memphis program. Burn the couches...!!!

**** talking mods?
This is why Memphis will probably never be much of a football power and why I am glad to exchange Memphis for MTSU. MTSU is serious about being a football program with a reputation of solid teams and Memphis is going to short change football for Basketball. Sure it might be decent one day in football on a regular basis, but it is always going to go basketball because that is where it's fan base really is as these post show.
Also I must point out that when Kentucky had Rupp they also had Bryant in football, but seeing that football would always lose out to basketball in head to head competition for money and such, Bryant left Kentucky. I suspect any Memphis football coach will see this as well and will move on for the same reason.
Schools choose which they want the most and Memphis is going to focus basketball over football, just as USM will focus on football over basketball. Sure there are programs that do very well at both, but even with them when it comes down to priority, schools like Memphis will go basketball, USM will go football. Frankly, there is more money in football, but basketball does bring in a good payday.
MTSU has shown they are going to be more competitive in football, but they seem to also strive more for balance and will bring an excellent basketball program although it appears football will probably excel more. USM is trying to be balanced, but football will always be king.
I don't disagree that the Tigers have a tough job of turning the program and perception around. Memphis has strived to be balanced just like all programs, but we've honestly just been very good at it most years. There are larger funds being assigned to the football program than in the past, but it is difficult to break through the "basketball school" perception that some recruits have. It takes time.
I agree that football provides more money if you're playing in a huge stadium, in one of the big conferences with a big media contract, and selling out games. We all accept that premise for universities in our tier, but for a mid-level conference that's below the big leagues, and playing before half full or even more, I'm not sure that football revenues drive the bus as much as we all think.
Even with the relatively low number of tournament bids that CUSA receives annually, does the conference make more $ from tournament credits or bowl games?....is there a bowl game that CUSA is attached to that actually returns a profit to the participant? I don't have facts/figures to answer those questions, but making money on mid-level bowl games is a tough proposition for most programs.
Just for grins and comparison, here are the reported ticket sales revenue for CUSA public programs for 2011. It's hard to look at those numbers and define football or basketball as the revenue driver based on classifying programs as "football or basketball" as everyone likes to do. Two programs stand out as ticket sales income producers and those 2 are also 2 of the 4 top revenue producing athletic programs in CUSA. Total revenue changes the order some, but not significantly.
In $ millions:
UAB: 1.1
UCF: 5.2
ECU: 8.0
UH: 3.4
Marshall: 3.2
Memphis: 9.2
USM: 2.8
UTEP: 3.3
ODU: 3.0
FIU: 0.7
FAU: 1.3
UNT: 0.8
Charlotte: 0.5
UTSA 0.1 (???)

Quote:Methodology
The data, updated for 2011, are based on the revenue and expense reports collected from more than 225 public schools in the NCAA's Division I that have an obligation to release the data (the NCAA does not release the data publicly). The others are private or are covered under a state exemption.
The best way to use the data is to compare a school's expenses over time to see how they have changed. Because the categories are standardized, comparisons between schools are possible as well. The school's president or chancellor reviews the data before it's submitted to the NCAA, which also does a general audit of the data. In an effort to standardize reporting, NCAA staff members have worked with the National Association of College and University Business Officers for formulate definitions for each category. Still, some schools interpret the reporting rules slightly differently.

yes , with the loss of uh/smu/ecu and the addition of untexas/uncc/odu/utsa the conference has certainly become a force to be reckoned with..

What was the state of Memphis football during that time period?
Everyone kicked our ass over that stretch. Hell, Arkansas State played a game (final score 47-3 or 47-10, I think) where they inserted their 2nd and 3rd strings in the 3rd quarter.
Times are changing here in Memphis. The Calipari/RC Johnson, "basketball will take us to the promised land" approach has been discarded for a long-overdue dose of reality.

I personally love going to the Memphis and MTSU games. I have a neighbor who is a U of M alum and we gather our families and take off to the game. Living in Jackson, we are an hour and some change from Memphis and with the completion of 840 (Thank you Lord!!!) we are right at 2 hours from M’boro. It seems like crowds for both sides have a pretty good time. Now the one thing I would like seeing in the middle and west end of our state is less ORANGE for the hill in the east and more BLUE! Of course that is a whole different conversation.

RE: MTSU vs. Memphis in football....I love it.....
All I know is back in 2007 I came here to the Memphis board, THRILLED over FAU's 1st ever bowl appearance. I was curious about the Memphis team and how we would stack up. I started some friendly banter on how good our QB was and that I thought he would pick apart the Memphis D.
Probably over half the responses about questions regarding Memphyis University and the Football program brought up how great its Basketball program was. When I said I didnt really care about College Basketball, the cries of outrage and derision were heard far and wide.
I was also introduced to......

Sadly I have never been the same. I think i still see a memphis T-shirt when I close my eyes. LOL

I apologize on behalf of the entire Memphis fanbase. I know that couldn't have been easy. Many of his t-shirts have haunted my dreams as well.

Deangelo Williams ain't walking out that tunnel...
5 bowls since 2000 means very little when you haven't even sniffed one after 2008, I guess in fairness if you had managed to find 4 more points against freaking Martin last year you would have been one win away from bowl eligibility...

Um...OK. Where to start.
Memphis, the schools, was a very strong supporter of CUSA, a conference we helped create. Yes, we wanted to move up...and should have gotten the call in 2004...but we certainly played nice while we were here.
Over our run, we were very competitive in just about every sport. We were not a one-trick pony, although we did have one pony that shined brighter than the rest.
There still plenty of money in Memphis, and more coming in...unfortunately (for some) it's not quite as evenly distributed as in other areas (clear separation between the haves and have nots). Nashville isn't as far behind Memphis in the crime stats as you guys would like to believe.
...but I'm sure none of that will stop little-brother MTSU from flinging poo.
