Since his wife is from Greeneville...I will maintain hope that he will put in 20 years making him 63 at the time of his retirement.

I remember watching the interviews here. More than a couple times people said that they wanted someone who would be here for a while, not use this as a stepping stone, etc. Every time, he nodded his head, said "ok". I do not believe Noland will be here in 10 years. We need to take advantage of this window

I hope Dr. Noland and his family will grow to love the area and the school so much that he stays for a very, very long time at ETSU. He will be the one responsible for a new golden era for the Bucs.

Dr. Noland was the leader of the entire higher education system in West Virginia. Lack of leadership experience?

No, he was the Chancellor, the highest ranking official in that system (think THEC with each University having its own local board), and appointed by the Governor of West Virginia. Below is a copy and paste from the announcement of his hiring. The Chancellor of that commission is the highest ranking higher education official in West Virginia. There are 11 Universities in the system including West Virginia University and Marshall.

"Noland, who currently serves as chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, was selected after an extensive nationwide search.

He has spent the last five years at West Virginia’s Higher Education Policy Commission, which serves in both a governing and coordinating capacity over the local boards of 11 public colleges and universities. While there he was responsible for developing and implementing the public policy agenda for the state’s higher education programs and served as the spokesperson and advocate for higher education.

Before returning to West Virginia, Noland worked at the Tennessee Higher Education Commission from 1998 through 2006 in increasingly responsible roles. Noland rose from assistant director of Academic Programs to director of Academic Affairs and was ultimately named associate executive director for THEC. In that role his responsibilities included the development and implementation of the state’s lottery scholarship program."

I have talked to a bunch of UT folks here in Knoxville that now wish he had been hired here... I believe he fell one vote short....he had a lot of support here..and now several of those from the other side have changed their minds.

There's about a $150,000 salary difference between the the jobs, and obviously the perceived prestige difference

This is depressing. I'm getting the impression that Noland's ambition is way beyond ETSU. That means he's a short timer. I'm bummed.

Guess what??? Yes - he's probably interested in a bigger job. All good candidates that we hire will be. That's ok. Think about it - how about Tulsa basketball? They have had Nolan Richardson, Tubby Smith, & Bill Self as coaches. All of those guys won titles, as in NCAA titles. All won @ Tulsa. Tulsa is a stepping stone, & dare I say, proud of it. So are we. I have no problem with that, as long as we ARE a stepping stone and not a place for people who are really not that good, regardless, athletics or academics, land for good.

Listen people - 5-7 years is what university presidents typically have in terms of the job. I'm fine with that. So yes, he'll be gone in 5-7 years, so what? By that time, we're in great shape, both academically & athletically. If he's here longer than that, it may be too long.

Chancellor of a state university SYSTEM is a lower position than president of a regional state university, of a flagship state university? Anyway, agree -- he will not retire at ETSU. If he wants the UT job, won't he have to produce during his tenure at ETSU in both academics and athletics? If that is the case, he'll be working his butt off to advance both ETSU and Brian Noland. Using ETSU to build his resume benefits both parties, right? What ETSU did not need at this time was another president looking for a place from which to retire. Let Noland build his resume at ETSU, move on, and retire at UT.

Great points. He's changed a lot of things in year 1. I'll take that kind of exponential growth in years 2-5 or 7. We just have to make sure we maintain it when he does take a bigger job and not make a Stansbury to Mullins type of blunder.

Noland is a man on the rise, no doubt. Let's ride his coat tail as far as it goes. Twice he has replaced UT hats with ETSU hats. For now, at least, he is fully ETSU's president.

I feel much better about this issue of Noland ambition now. I was at the Chattanooga chapter of the national alumni association meeting tonight. I was point blank in my concern that his tenure could be short. He suggested he's at ETSU for the rest of the way. He explained he loved the area, his wife from Greeneville, he's from Virginia...they love ETSU and then he said, "why would I want to leave?"

We all know the answers to that one...more money, more prestige.

My subjective opinion is that Noland is telling the truth...that he's a 20 year man. He is hugely ambitious. I suspect leading ETSU into uncharted territory with no ceiling has tremendous appeal. It's why he's spending so much time reaching out to strangers to get involved. At these alumni meetings...there is no heavy fund raising trip...as a matter of fact...there is none. Money is never asked for. For all the projects Noland has in mind it's gonna take money.

The ETSU president has a plan. He has revealed some of it. I wish I understood more. What I see is a man who is a workaholic, seems glad his missed out of the Tennessee job by one vote...and is determined to make the Bucs a school of national reputation.

Now the question of whether that includes Murry. Why oh why did Mullins extend Bartow's contract?

As for Sander...Buc footballers had him cornered throwing question after question at him. I wasn't within ear shot. I still don't understand not throwing some carpet down in the dome until the new ball park is built. Carpet is needed for indoor practice for the team and the possible recruitment of an NFL team. ETSU is a great place for the pros to train and indoors eliminates downtime due to weather. If the dome is in the long term future of ETSU, make it functional!

These are exciting days to be a Buccaneer. For years I've dreamed of having leadership that could actualize on ETSU potential. I'm an ETSU cheerleader, I've bought in. My hope and prayer is that we get behind these dreams and see them through to reality.

I agree with Mister. Throw some of the new style field turf down in the dome for a year or two.They make a rollable version of it. (Northern AZ has it in their dome) And then use it as an indoor practice facility like no other. I know the sight lines suck at the Dome, but as a stop gap measure, I think it would work until the new yard is done.
