A truly sad pic from USM campus....
The District is where students tailgate. It is an area that was full of old oak trees and much history. This is what it looks like today. A very sad pic for USM students, alumni and supporters....TTT

Back in the day, I used to rent a house at 302 N25th...can't get there unless on foot right now....that area was hit hard according to social media...I have a number of properties I service along that line...waiting for the roads to be cleared.

It's hard to look at those pictures. I know it's only a school that I went to for a degree, but for 2 years it was another home. I worked on campus.. I spent countless hours not only getting educated there, but going to games, hanging out with friends, working there, etc. On my fiancee's first trip to MS, I made sure we went to USM because it was that special to me.

I'm just at a loss.

I agree. For once in my life I can say the words: Thank God for Mardi Gras.. If not, who knows how bad it would've been.

That's a real shame. Like posters have said, so much history there, but on the positive side, no one was killed.

Just curious, so I did a search for old pics of the District, but couldn't find any. Does anyone have any to post?

Wow. Did the twister actually hit a portion of the campus?

Let me do a search. I think I have one somewhere from a few years back.

What a shame. The Honor House we just built looks like a complete write-off. Elam Arms looks like it was bombed. We had such a nice campus. I hope this turns out OK. I have not heard whether classrooms or sports facilities were hurt but I think not. Some of the music facilities across from Elam Arms may have been hit, and that's bad.

one thing I am glad of it that it happened on Sunday and not Saturday when the big game with Memphis was going on. That along with that many in area were not working or out on a Sunday is also a something to be glad of, but even with that, it is a horrible sight and in an area that has seen enough storm damage in the last 8 to 10 years.

RE: A truly sad pic from USM campus....
When the three hurricanes hit Central Florida in 2004 UCF lost a bunch of trees and there was a lot of water damage. Many trees were snapped in half and others uprooted completely.

Part of the roof was blown off the student recreation center which had to be closed for about a month for repairs. The damage to that building alone cost well over $2.5 million. There was also water damage to our library which had to close the entire fifth floow, very expensive equipment was damaged in our center for optics, and a few other buildings also needed repairs.

Nearly nine years later, I'm happy to say that you really can't tell where the damage occurred on UCF's campus. Many trees were replanted and are now maturing and the buildings are all back to normal. Just like UCF did, USM will clean up, move on, and soon enough it will all be a distant memory. The good thing is that no one was killed.

It hit Oak Grove High School, USM, Hattiesburg HS and Petal HS. That's four of the five biggest education centers in the area. Only William Carey University was spared.
