And that AQ ends when this TV contract begins so its not logical to compare them to the other AQ conferences.

Quote:Also, when you lose 7 of your original members (the current catholic school defections), than lose TCU, Boise State and San Diego State before they even play a single game, and are now in litigation to even keep the conference name, when is it time to call the conference in serious jeopardy??? With your line of thought, the Titanic had a mere scratch from bouncing into a large ice cube.

People didn't want to get on the Titanic as it was sinking...MOST of the MAC, CUSA and Sun Belt would gladly jump on/in to the BE as long as it is a overall financial improvement.

Quote:I agree with everyone here that you can now compare them to the MAC and MWC, and some could argue it is worse than these two. Memphis??? UCF??? Houston??? SMU??? Couldn't NIU have beat all these teams last year as well as a couple other MAC teams?

Yes but the perception of that conference champ will almost always be greater than the MAC champ unless 2003 and 2012 happens much more frequently. The reality is that the MAC has had 1 really good year in the past 9 seasons and unless the conference sustains the success of 2012 then no, the MAC is not equal to the BE or MWC.

Quote:The Big East is now solely a basketball conference...and that is only worth $2 million per team to the media. Watch what happens when the Georgetown and St. John's leave...this could go down to only $1 million a team and even then will be overpriced for the football.

I am still not clear if this 20-23mil is for just FB or FB/BB. I think McMurphy tweeted that it was for football only but then later that day I read an article of his which made it seem like it was both sports.

RE: Big East TV contract
Looks like ESPN and the Big East are ready to sign their new TV contract at $20 million per year. Depending on how many teams are in the BE that breaks down to less than $2 million per year per team. Interestingly the Big East rejected an offer from ESPN in 2011 that would have given each team $14 million per year. Ouch.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/...media-deal

If I am reading it correctly, football-only members would get a half-share annually, something like $900 K. If we were in the Big East we would have to take 5 to 7 plane trips per year. It's like going to a non-BCS bowl x 6. We would lose our shirts. We literally cannot afford to be in that league.

Since NBC didn't get the deal they have to be looking for a Conf. to fill some time. I hope the MAC for once is proactive and is contacting them ASAP. If ESPN doesn't pick-up some games NBC would be allowed to I believe. Would be huge for the conf. to have games on some other networks.

RE: Big East TV contract
I don't get why anybody in the MAC (at least those in the top half) would want to go join the Big East. That is little money, not big money. Yeah it's even less money in the MAC but the expenses are much less. They aren't profiting any more with their contract than we are I bet. Also, why would you want to go join a league of misfits that all want out worse than our teams have wanted out of the MAC?

Also, the top few teams in the MAC have just as good of a chance of making that BCS slot as the top few of the Big East and CUSA. MWC strength of schedule probably has them in a better position than us 3 though.

...Come on. The BE would have an 8 game conference schedule. Those games would be half home and away so your looking at 4 conference away games. As of now NIU takes 1-2 trips on an airplane to our MAC opponents like Buffalo, UMASS, Akron, Kent St and not sure about Ohio. Adding 2 more trips would not cost us 900k.

On top of that you are not considering the bowl distributions/tie ins and the BCS GO5 money will be much better in the BE than the MAC.

Still the only way we actually join the BE is if one close MAC West school (Ball St, Toledo or WMU) and a minimum of 2 total MAC teams join. Us + 3 MAC teams would be the best IMO. This would help keep our travel costs lower and would be the best to keep things familiar with some of the competition and facilities.

I think it's a good thing for both the Catholic 7 and for the new football conference. The Big East in football has taken a lot of **** over the past year, so it's good for them to basically start from scratch.

Though with the Metro Conference they at least retain some history.
