TV contract news
Just saw this:
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...ghts-deals

The Catholic 7 schools -- DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova -- haven't formed a new league yet, but Fox Sports has been the leader for their media rights after approaching the schools before they had even left the Big East, sources said. Fox Sports' offer would be worth $30 million to $40 million a year depending on how many teams are in the league, sources said.

This doesn't seem to be as much as we were thinking.... I'd assume 40 million would be 12 teams.....

that'd be 3.33 million per school dividing equally(12 teams) to 3 million per school(10 teams).

also interesting at the end of the article:
The Catholic 7 schools still must form a league, decide on a commissioner, bylaws, location, championships, compliance rules and how many schools they will add. They are expected to initially target Butler and Xavier out of the Atlantic 10, and possibly grow to 10 or 12 teams with candidates among Creighton, Dayton, Saint Louis, Richmond and VCU.

The Fox and NBC deals are part of the reasoning why the Catholic 7 is still holding out hope it could leave in the fall of 2013. To do so, though, they would need other schools to buy their way out of the A-10 and possibly the Missouri Valley if Creighton is invited.

RE: TV contract news
my hunch, if the NBE does go with NBC, that would hasten the departure for this year....

Also, and this is just a thought, maybe Notre Dame knew about the NBC Sports deal for the NBE, and they are sticking around so they could perhaps get some NBC basketball appearances in the winter?

I think something pretty interesting as was said in the article- if we do start in '13, would schools be willing to buy their way out of the conferences to join immediately? This may have as much of a say in who joins as anything else.

RE: TV contract news
20 million for the Big East? 2 million a school sounds really low, is that for just basketball or basketball AND football? If the BE7 can get 3-4 million, not sure why the A-10 schools wouldn't want to buy out (1 million?) and Creighton can leave w/o penalty. Money isn't that off, the 500 million offer for 12 schools was 3.5 million so it's pretty close.

I wonder if given the difference between 10-12 teams seems to be about 300k per school if the 10 seems a lot more likely? The 40 million would be for 12 teams.

Are you sure Creighton can leave without penalty 4 months out? I can't imagine the MVC is that weak they have no exit fees at all....

RE: TV contract news
just a thought, but any chance the 30 million would be for 9 teams? That'd be same value per school as for 12 teams. Meaning we'd add only Butler and Xavier.

I could see some value in that. I mean for one, have 2 fewer conference games, which would allow us to schedule more OOC quality games to help alleviate the drop in the SOS.

Personally I'd love to have 9 teams and have round robins with everyone.

That's what I've heard from others but haven't actually researched myself, it might be something really low like 50K.

wow, that's bizarre. You'd have thought given the time we're in they would have put one in.

Thing is, the MVC has been pretty stable and has not changed membership in like the last 20 years or so. They probably just haven't caught up with the times yet.

last add was Evansville I think in '94...

Wonder what the A10 fee is for the others.

And- I do wonder if 9 or 10 is a real option.

One thing that is wild, just looked at the story again, they updated it and took out the last paragraph. Kind of interesting there about the C7 expansion etc.

Don't quote me on this but i thought I read that if Xavier left with two years notice it's 1m and if they leave immediately it's 2m I'm exit fees. The same holds for Butler

Where are you guys getting 9 teams from? Fox wants more content not less. 40 for 12, 30 for 10. They are willing to pay us more for more teams. Should ask how much for 13 or 14 teams.
