Mick's postgame comments - Providence Game
- not enough guys contributing right now
- when you get the ball to 1 or 2 feet (from the basket) and can't score, the opposing team just presses you harder and harder
- couldn't get rebounds - that's where not having JJ killed us.
- our big guys had 1 offensive rebound, you can't have that
- we were not tough enough, your mom isn't here to bail you out
- Cashmere hasn't been the same player since he got hurt, he's giving us all he got though
- 6-35 over last 4 games (Cash)
- we don't score a basket in the last 8 minutes
- mbodj had 1 rebound for the game, we got crushed on the boards
- defensive breakdowns and not rebounding killed this team, because you're going to have shooting droughts (paraphrasing)
- 1-16 on 3's in the second half
- you can only defend for so long, at some point you gotta make some shots
- lose points in the paint by 10
- S K and Cash combined for 3 assists and 8 turnovers, recipe for disaster
- we have to try harder
- I'm concerned about too many guys satisfied with how they're doing, I challenge the leadership of our team
- there's a difference between this team thinking they're in the tournament and everything is okay, being satisfied.........everything is not okay, we have no sense of urgency or readiness
- we may have to play 5 guards next game if our bigs aren't going to rebound
- leadership guys need to get the team ready, not just themselves

Kind of sounds like a description of Tony Yates' '83-'84 team that went 3-25 I think.

I said that in the second half of the game thread.
I'm ready to move on to next season. And I hope we see more of the new guys because we know what we got with the others.

Hopefully they will have some basketball skills and hoops IQ.

Shaq Thomas looks promising, Guyn looked good in his minutes too. I am excited to see what they will be able to do with Rubles, Jackson and Lawrence at the 4/5.

RE: Mick's postgame comments
I know it is sacrilege and heresy in the world of UC fandom, but I have never really loved this roster this year and I never bought in that we were world beaters.
Not sure if I should be pissed at the coaches for recruiting this roster or if I should sing their praises for accomplishing what they have with what they have to work with. Verklempt.

There is blame to go around, not being able to land a competent big man doomed this team. Sucks to have missed out on God's Gift, AJ Hammons (although I wasn't a huge fan of his) and Obekpa.

RE: Mick's postgame comments
From his postgame comments, Cronin is the NCAA Coach of the Year. He layed out the perfect gameplan, called perfect offensive sets, etc.
Players play, but the offense stinks.

Mick needs to say this while looking in the mirror.

Who exactly is the leadership? Cash and SK. See my post in the game thread. They are a huge issue right now.

Apparently neither you, nor Mick think it is the head coach

The gameplan was fine. The offense looked good most of the game. When your top two shooters are missing every wide open shot the offense gives them you will lose.

I'm sure Mick wished he had done a few things differently. The man has done enough at this level to prove he's a capable coach. His biggest mistake was not making sure we have a serviceable big man. I'll never not watch UC but this offense we run out there is just sickening to watch.

We all know our big men are just dreadful, awful . The second thing is the lack of motion on the offensive end; layers just standing around, usually three eor four of them outside the arc.
Ya'll are saying you're looking forward to having a new roster but you're not really calling out anyone from this year's roster. Who are you mad at?
Nyarsuk and Mbodj are stiffs.

If we are basically down cash and Jackson there is no way we beat anyone decent.

Not that it matters but it doesn't sound much like a description of Yates 83-84 team at all. That team was simply over matched from the start...no starter over 6'5. That team actually played with some intelligence, discipline and heart...they simply didn't have the talent to play at the level they were put into. I'd give my left wing nut for this team to have 10% of the non physical good qualities the 83-84 team had.

Wow, people ready for next year's roster already. You want to know what next year's roster will look like? Watch Guyn run the point without any offensive production and plug him him in 25-30 min a game next year. Take away Parkers toughness and rebounding. We have already seen Jackson and Rubles at the 4/5, which works for brief periods, but Rubles thinks he is a 3 point specialist and Jackson has the lowest Bball IQ in college. Add in the freshmen who will look good in Nov and Dec, but will look like deer in headlights in BEast play and that is next years roster. Cash may not be playing well right now, but he will be missed more than any player in the Cronin era.

Right now we are missing Gates a whole bunch.

I am definately NOT looking forward to seeing Jackson, Rubles, Lawrence front court next year.
I do not want to see JJ and Rubles in at the same time unless they have an amazing offseason. We would just be playing 2-3 on 5 again.
GO SMALL MICK!
5- JJ or Rubles
4- Parker
3- Shaq
2- SK
1- Cash
